Why can't egg cartons be returned to Migros? The use-by date would not necessarily have to be visible on the carton, as the eggs are already stamped accordingly. This could save a lot of unnecessary waste.
Egg cartons can be put in the organic waste container - at least in Zurich. This is probably also possible in other municipalities.
I don't just want to dispose of it, not even in a bio-waste container. The carton is only needed for transporting the eggs home, so it is neither dirty nor damaged in any other way.

your argument also applies to numerous other packaging/containers, for all of which the same background regarding destruction/recycling probably applies: The incredibly lofty, blatantly luxury-spoiled food laws, which can only be applied in the current era of humanity and only in seemingly privileged parts of the 1st world....
So you want Migros to collect the returned egg cartons neatly in the store and return them to the egg factories so that they can be refilled there? In the short term, this certainly seems sensible, but in practice it is hardly feasible.
Well, people could just fill the eggs into the cartons themselves. You can do that occasionally with boiled eggs (e.g. after Easter). There could always be a few pre-packed, unused cartons available for the hot ones. I think most people would opt for the environmentally unfriendly option if given the choice. After all, eggs have a shell around them that nobody eats (so the hygiene aspect is only of limited use to me).
@AlMiDeCoLiWhetheryou can put the cardboard boxes in the compost has nothing to do with the municipality, but with the material from which the cardboard boxes were made. Depending on the store or brand, they may or may not be labeled as compostable.
I see. Return the egg carton yes - but only if you take it back filled.

So it wasn't that I had to fill the carton again. It was more that there might be a stand or something similar next to the (openly lined up) eggs where you could put the carton. If you need eggs, take a carton from the stand and fill it.
Egg cartons must not be reused, as food must be protected from contamination during production, storage and transportation.
Used cartons can be contaminated with germs, pathogens such as salmonella, so they are classified as unclean and unhygienic.
