What is Migros' policy on BPA in tins? I can't find any information on this either online or on the tins. Let's take canned tomatoes, for example. Are these normal cans with the usual BPA contamination, or has Migros already done something about it?

I would like to take up this topic again, as the legal situation has recently changed in Switzerland too. I do our bookkeeping once a month. As we do 90% of our shopping at Migros, most of the receipts are from Migros. What is striking is that after a very short time I feel itchy in my fingers, eyes and wherever I have touched myself with my fingers. In short: I'm probably allergic to some substance from the till receipts. (I've had these reactions for a few years now, but they're getting worse.) I'd therefore be interested to know what the receipts at Migros are made of. BPA should no longer be an issue. But what is it then? BPS? Pergafast 201? ... And if I can no longer use physical receipts, I'd love a csv download of all my purchases (with all the details). Is that possible?
Hello schneich, thank you for your message. I am sorry that you are allergic to one of the substances used for the receipts. I was happy to check with our specialist department: our receipts have been phenol-free for years. This means that they do not contain bisphenol A (BPA), BPF or BPS. It is understandable that you therefore want to do without the physical slips. We have been aware of this issue for some time. We have recently received an increasing number of inquiries on this topic, as this is an important need for many of our customers. In order to meet this request, our checkout devices must be converted to a new system throughout Switzerland. We are currently working intensively on this. As soon as the systems meet the requirements, they will be implemented. I ask for your patience. Kind regards, Tabea

Hi Tabea, thanks for the information. The fact that the receipts do not contain BPA, etc. is of course good news. But what substance is used for the thermal paper? I would like to find out which substance I am reacting to.

Hello schneich, thank you for your query. There is no legal obligation to provide information here. The supplier is therefore not obliged to provide us with any information. We suspect that the intolerance is due to something else. However, we recommend that you access the receipts via the Migros app. That way you no longer have to touch paper receipts. Best regards, Noemi

Hello, the last answer from Dominik(Migros) was three years ago. I would be interested to know what has happened since then. What about BPA in tins and screw-top jar lids and all food containers at Migros? I am particularly concerned because we are cooking for a one-year-old child, who is affected differently and has different limits for such substances than adults. Thank you very much for your feedback. Kind regards Boeli

Hello Boeli, thank you very much for your contribution. We can well understand your concerns. Migros has been monitoring the issue of bisphenol A (BPA) for years. We base our risk assessments on the statements of the FOPH (Federal Office of Public Health), the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) and the BfR (Federal Institute for Risk Assessment). Our suppliers are obliged to comply with the legal requirements. We carry out regular checks on bisphenol A as part of our sample checks and product range inspections to ensure compliance with the law. In addition, BPA-free inner coatings are now increasingly being used for canned food, which means that not every can with an inner coating necessarily contains BPA. Kind regards, Matteo

Dear Matteo Thank you for your prompt reply. Are the cans that contain BPA or no BPA labelled in any way? I find it astonishing that BPA is still present, even though it has been an issue for years and is not beyond doubt. Kind regards Isabelle

I find it irresponsible - legal requirements or not - that the inner coating of cans in Migros is still not guaranteed to be BPA-free. We therefore only buy canned vegetables from Bonduelle (all cans are BPA-free, and BPA is banned in cans in France), or vegetables in jars. Unfortunately, there are some canned things that my parents like best from Migros, such as the V-Love beans and the V-Love chili... :-( :-(

Dear Isabelle, thank you very much for your query. We are currently clarifying this with the specialist department. You will hear from us again as soon as possible. Best regards, Matteo

Hello Isabelle, we are generally not legally obliged to declare BPA. We voluntarily declare the material for food contact materials. All our packaging complies with our internal specifications and all legal requirements. We also regularly check all packaging (especially plastic packaging) on a risk basis. Depending on the product and its acidity, we use either tin or plastic to coat the inside walls of cans. Of course, there are also clear guidelines for these materials, which we constantly review. As a result, both materials are unproblematic. They are ideal for storing food in tins and guarantee the specified shelf life. Kind regards, Susi

I raised this issue 12 years ago, and the first response was immediately to point out the legally prescribed maximum values. This was followed later by a reference to the non-existent obligation to make a declaration. Both were repeated several times in Migros' replies. Also the statement that the changeover is a slow process. We consumers are of course pleased that Migros is making progress here. Europe, however, has long since moved on. France has even banned BPA since 2016 - in other words, when I asked the question, France already had alternatives in place. It is disappointing that Migros continued to refer to the maximum levels that apply here for a long time, even though it was already known at the time that BPA is harmful to health in the long term even in much smaller quantities, thus ignoring the health of its customers. After all, two years ago it was said that more and more packaging was BPA-free. Now I would like to ask Migros to publish a list of either the BPA-containing or BPA-free products that they sell. Thank you very much!
