What is Migros' policy on BPA in tins? I can't find any information on this either online or on the tins. Let's take canned tomatoes, for example. Are these normal cans with the usual BPA contamination, or has Migros already done something about it?

How do your receipts look today?
Bisphenol A (BPA) in the receipt gets under your skin
Coop replaces receipts due to cancer fears
SBB dispenses with harmful substances in tickets
The last article says you're doing away with receipts with BPA?
@Tanja_Migros Have you already received an answer to Reto's question?
It's actually quite frightening what Migros puts up with:
20 minutes - The plastic industry has reacted and developed substitutes such as Bisphenol S (BPS). But this also has serious side effects, as neurologists from the University of Calgary have now reported in the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences". Just like BPA, BPS also leads to increased growth of nerve cells in the hypothalamus, a region of the brain responsible for attention and aggression.
As Migros will not act overnight because it does not want to or cannot, it is up to us to look at what we consume every day!
I would like to buy everything without packaging...

Hello Ivan
I'll ask again about the status of Reto's question and at the same time pass on your request regarding BPA.
As soon as I receive feedback, I'll get back to you here. If it takes too long, feel free to poke me :-)
Best regards
Tanja

Hello everyone
It is true that the Migros receipts are BPA-free. In addition, they are made from FSC-certified paper, and the new issue of using BPS instead of BPA for the receipts is currently being clarified with our suppliers.
Kind regards

I feel sorry for the cashiers who come into contact with it all day long. It would be interesting to see how much BPA is in them. Do you tell your employees this when they are hired or do you keep it from them? Are employees now allowed to wear gloves to protect themselves?

Significantly increased exposure of cashiers in supermarkets has been detected.[21] In August 2011, Greenpeace Magazine published the results of an investigation of receipts from large retail chains supervised by Manfred Krautter.[22] According to this, BPA was still detectable in some of the receipts, otherwise it was mainly bisphenol S that was found, which has apparently been used on a large scale. Of 124 thermal papers tested in Switzerland between September 2013 and January 2014, BPA was detected in 100 samples and bisphenol S in 4 samples.[23] In 2014, the US Environmental Protection Agency published a report with assessments of 19 different alternative substances for thermal paper production.[24] No substance could be identified as clearly safer, mainly because there is usually insufficient toxicological data available and there are at least doubts about its safety due to structural similarities. Completely bisphenol-free thermal papers are now also available[23].

Hello @Tanja_Migros,
what did the clarification with your supplier reveal?
"Products labeled as "BPA-free" have become a real marketing hit in recent years as awareness of the plastic hazard has grown. Instead of BPA, many producers of plastic utensils now use BPS - especially for children's toys and bottles. Apparently, however, this is at least as harmful an alternative. Arbitrarily replacing a well-documented evil with an unresearched substitute does not appear to be a sensible solution, according to the Canadian scientists. Particularly insidious: BPA and BPS can be detected in the urine of almost all people, but their cell-damaging effects often only develop after years of exposure."

Hello@ivan92
I have just followed up and received the information that our receipts are not only BPA-free, but completely phenol-free. This means that they do not contain any BPS or BPF.
Best regards
Tanja

What kind of "new" chemical is now used in your receipts so that they remain "printable" with thermal printers?
Guest
Hello@ivan92
Our suppliers have developed a new process for this. This allows phenol-free printing.
Kind regards
