Is there any sensible reason why organic vegetables and fruit are packaged more than normal ones? The question for me is whether I should buy organic if I'm buying plastic made from crude oil around it. I actually think that's a shame. E.g. Kohleräbli without organic no packaging organic plastic around it. Tomatoes on a stick normal, no packaging, organic wrapped in plastic AND plastic tray in packaging.

as a migros employee and consumer, i have also noticed that organic products in the fruit and vegetable department are already delivered pre-packed, and i think that's a shame, because the waste fees are no longer cheap, and it's anything but environmentally friendly. i would also be happy if something could be done about it, and the organic fruit and vegetables would also be available in open sales in the future.
yes, i have to agree with you again, but why not turn the tables and pack everything that isn't organic and have the organic goods on sale? because the packaging has nothing to do with organic anymore... and it's certainly not environmentally friendly.

Hello everyone
And I have already received an answer:
As a supplier of organic products, Migros is obliged to ensure that organic and conventional goods are not confused. We can best guarantee this if organic products only come to the store in packaging. Packaging also prevents contamination during transportation and in the store.
Of course, this results in quite large quantities of packaging; however, this can be destroyed harmlessly in any case, and some can even be composted (e.g. the carrot bags).
Further trials are currently underway to be able to offer even more compostable packaging in the future.
All non-packaged products would have to be labeled with a sticker on each individual fruit. Various pilot trials have been carried out in some cooperatives, but no definitive decision has yet been made on whether to introduce them.
Have you ever discovered these individually labeled organic fruits - and immediately recognized them as organic?
Kind regards

Hello Sabine
Thank you very much for the quick and detailed answer :-)
i have to say that these reasons also make sense, and i didn't know that the organic carrot bags are compostable. and it's not a problem with the cardboard boxes because i have a cardboard factory nearby where you can recycle them. and i like the idea of trying more compostable packaging because it's very environmentally friendly afterwards, because organic and unecological packaging don't really go together!
and no, apart from the lemons, i haven't seen these fruits anywhere, or at least i've never noticed them.

The only drawback to the eco-bags is that they are made from corn starch. Sounds great at first, but when you consider that people are still starving on the planet....
It's not easy with eco and organic these days.
Dear Migros
Can I hand in the packaging for my organic products at my local store? My partner and I are vegans and consequently buy a lot of fruit and vegetables at Migros. As we have a very ecological mindset, but are still careful to keep our money together, we buy the majority of our organic products at Migros.
However, it is unacceptable that the contents of our rubbish bag consist mainly of this unnecessary plastic waste. Please offer an alternative to this plastic waste or finally take back the packaging.

Hello question mark
Thank you for your message. I can well understand that it is sometimes awkward with the packaging. However, as already described above (by Sabine_Migros), Migros is obliged to ensure that organic and conventional products can be clearly distinguished from each other. The best way to do this is through the packaging.
However, we are constantly expanding and improving our recycling offer. For example, we recently started taking back shampoo bottles. Until there is a way to recycle organic packaging sensibly, I recommend that you use the garbage cans that are available after the checkouts in most stores.
Kind regards
