Hello Elena20, thank you for your inquiry. You are correct in your assumption: we use palm oil for the vanilla cup. This is due to the many specific properties of the ingredient. Palm oil is one of the few vegetable fats that is already solid at room and refrigerator temperature (in contrast to olive oil, rapeseed oil, etc.). Artificial hardening is therefore not necessary. This is an advantage in production, as incomplete hardening produces undesirable trans fatty acids. It can also be heated to high temperatures. For this reason, manufacturers like to use palm oil for products where a certain firmness is required. Replacing palm oil with other vegetable oils or fats, for example, not only has a decisive influence on the consistency, but also on the shelf life and mouthfeel of a product. Of course, we regularly check our recipes and make adjustments where possible. However, it is also important to consider the other side of the coin: Palm oil is 5 to 10 times more productive than rapeseed or coconut oil, for example. This means that more land is needed to grow the latter. Switching to other oils is therefore not a sustainable solution. Scientific studies by the ETH and the WWF confirm that substituting palm oil does not protect the environment, whereas improving cultivation, standards and controls does. Migros is therefore considering both ways - renouncing and substituting where sensible and feasible, as well as ensuring and committing to the use of sustainably cultivated palm oil - as a viable approach to this issue. Together with the WWF, Migros launched the "Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO)" in 2004. We can physically trace 99.3 % of the palm oil used in our own food brands and work with our suppliers to improve living conditions and ecology on the plantations. In cooperation with our suppliers and the standard setters, we naturally also ensure that, among other things, no rainforests are cut down but protected, that no peat bogs are destroyed and that no critical pesticides are used. Migros also sets clear requirements in terms of social conditions. The independent organization "Earthworm Foundation" regularly checks these. You can find out more here. If a method of processing the vanilla cup without palm fat is found without compromising the quality of the dessert, we will be happy to test it. We hope our efforts are in your interest.
