Hello, I have a question about the production of this buffalo mozzarella: how are the buffaloes whose milk is used to make it kept? I have recently read many reports about the appalling conditions in which the buffalo are kept and how they die of starvation. This is often the case with Italian buffalo mozzarella in particular. Thank you in advance for your quick reply.
Dear Larissa22 Thank you for your contribution. We apologize that you are only hearing from us today, but we are also aware of these abuses in buffalo farming. We are very concerned and do not want to stand idly by. As part of our Generation M promise, we will adapt animal welfare to Swiss standards and hopefully improve the situation. A corresponding project will be launched in the course of this year. We wish you beautiful spring days and see you soon in your Migros! Kind regards from your M-Infoline team

Hello Based on the following page, I started researching and came across GastM's question: https://help.four-paws.org/de-CH/b%C3%BCffelmozzarella-premium-haltungsbedingungen-f%C3%BCr-premiumprodukte I was alsopuzzled by the M-Infoline's answer to "inspection of ONE production facility". Are all supplying farms inspected unannounced, or is it really just one farm (which would then have to be huge, which in itself is a difficulty when it comes to animal welfare), or are there farms that are not inspected at all? And of course certain standards should also apply if it is not a premium product but a "normal" one. Kind regards
Hello m-d Thank you for your interest. We have the suppliers of buffalo mozzarella and their producers regularly inspected by independent inspection bodies. Random checks are carried out at producer and farmer level. The criticism you mentioned is correct and must be corrected. We are aware that animal welfare is an important concern for our customers. This is precisely why, as part of 'Generation M', we promise that the high Swiss animal welfare standards will also be introduced for foreign products by 2020. This also applies to buffalo mozzarella, where we will be implementing improvements for animal welfare in the near future. We hope this has been helpful and wish you a good day. Your M-Infoline team

I have a question, I know you don't like critical questions and yet.... it has to be now.
Last Monday there was a story in the Tages Anzeiger about water buffalo (for mozzarella) that really shocked me.
It was about the fact that the male buffalo calves are "disposed of" relatively quickly.
I can live with the slaughter (yes, I know, now all the vegans and vegetarians are pouncing on me) but apparently some farms let the buffalo calves starve to death, they are abandoned, suffocated or simply thrown into the cesspit.
The worst are in the areas where traditional buffalo mozzarella is produced, where the original MOZZARELLA DI BUFALA CAMPANA is made.
It also said that Migros is not particularly interested in this. What do you think? Is that really true?
Here is the report that addresses Gast:
http://www.tagesanzeiger.ch/ipad/wirtschaft/Die-unappetitliche-Seite-br-des-Bueffelmozzarellas/25622248/print.html
and here is an earlier report that "acko" may have read:

In my opinion, the first comment is more credible!

I think it's cruel. It's pure torture for the animals, it can't be good. And I certainly wouldn't buy milk from cows like that.
I have nothing against the actual drinking of milk, the way it is done in theory: Cow stands on pasture, has lots of exercise, in summer on the mountain pasture and when it has a calf, you tap some milk from it for your own use.
It is clear that this cannot exist in our consumer society. That's why I don't buy these products.
Hello everyone
Thank you for your feedback. We understand that the article in the Tagesanzeiger raises concerns.
In early summer 2013, Migros commissioned an independent inspection organization to inspect a production facility. A Migros employee was also present during the unannounced inspection of the Italian producers. The serious abuses mentioned in the article were not found. However, the inspection reports do show potential for improvement in some cases. The suppliers have a duty to implement the improvement measures.
We require producers to ensure that calves are kept in groups in large areas and that their lying areas are littered. When keeping cows, regular professional animal care (e.g. hoof care) is mandatory. Cooling facilities and protection from the weather and wind are also mandatory.
As part of Generation M, we promise to introduce the high Swiss animal welfare standards for all our products from abroad by 2020. This also applies to water buffalo. Further concrete measures to achieve the animal welfare standard in accordance with Swiss legislation will be agreed in the upcoming talks with suppliers.
You can find more information about the Animal Welfare Pledge at the following link:

@M-Team
Thank you very much for the information.
You mentioned so wonderfully that the "control of ONE production company" and "However, the control reports show potential for improvement in some cases" and since I assume that ONE company cannot supply Migros throughout Switzerland, I consider the report in the Tagi and your lack of interest to be true.
So I have decided not to buy any buffalo mozzarella from Italy and only buy from regional retailers.
Migros and your Generation M promise is unfortunately just advertising for me! With more than 600 million in profits, it should be possible to react to such problems more often and, above all, faster than by 2020!
Perhaps more attention should also be paid to Swiss production. Would boost the Swedish economy and I don't think the price would increase sooo much!
A disappointed customer!

I couldn't find my favorite mozzarella at "my" Migros today, and it's no longer available. Is it out of the range?
Your Migros Bahnhof Bern store stocks buffalo mozzarella. If you can't find it on your next visit, our friendly staff will be happy to help you. Ton équipe M-Infoline
