Recently sold out everywhere, shelves full of imported barn eggs, Migros Aare, Lupfig, Windisch, Buchs AG and so on.
What's going on?
Hello clini, since 2022, the demand for fresh conventional Swiss eggs has increased by approx. 12 %. On the retail side, we are always in close contact with our suppliers and are constantly making forecasts about developments. However, nobody expected this kind of growth. We can therefore only ensure availability by importing additional eggs from abroad. We will do everything we can to have enough eggs on the shelves. Best regards, your M-Infoline team
Since 2022? But maybe it's just that Migros wants to push prices down and the suppliers aren't playing along? After all, they want to look good with the new low price policy. The fact that the suppliers are not also being squeezed is probably the stuff of fairy tales!
So the expensive Aargau free-range eggs and imported eggs are available?
The normally affordable eggs are not. You're doing something wrong, it can't be.
🤗 Hello, why are the eggs labeled "low price" (not the only product) even though the price has been raised from 4.95 to 5.10?
Other products with this "low price" have not changed at all. Still the same as before the low price. Are you trying to mislead customers?
Hello clinim, thank you for your question. We are monitoring the market very closely. Here, for example, the starting position is crucial. This year, prices went up significantly. The reason for this is that the male chicks should no longer be killed after hatching. The procedure for sexing during hatching involves additional costs. This generates additional costs. The market now needs to find its feet again. Some retailers have adjusted their prices upwards, others have stood still. Migros must now also find its place in the market again. Why is there a star deduction for animal welfare on the packaging? Is this also the case with organic eggs? Do you love the shredding of the male chicks?
Hello Kymba00, thank you for your inquiry. As of today, IP-Suisse eggs are rated with 4 stars and organic eggs with 5 stars. The M-Check animal welfare rating is based on the sum of several criteria. You can find more information here: M-Check : How we rate eggs - Migros. The IP-Suisse husbandry guidelines for laying hens differ in several respects from the requirements for organic farming, for example: Laying hens are kept in smaller flocks on organic farms, where there is a larger pasture and barn area per hen.
The M-Check animal welfare assessments are carried out by the HAFL School of Agricultural, Forest and Food Sciences. The consideration of all assessment criteria (control, pasture, barn dimensions, animal health, transportation, etc.) leads to the final assessment, which is shown on the packaging.
In Switzerland, the shredding of live chicks has been banned since the beginning of 2020. Killing with CO2 remains permitted. The egg industry has decided to phase out the killing of male chicks. In future, only female chicks will hatch with the solution of sex determination in the egg. The situation is different for organic eggs, where Bio Suisse has decided that all eggs should be hatched and the male chicks fattened.
Migros already sells "Respeggt" eggs(Buy Swiss Eggs M - free-range - Migros) for which no male chicks have to die. Further information: Only free-range eggs and more respect for roosters | Company (migros.ch)

I understand that, but there are organic eggs with different numbers of stars, free-range with 3★, regional with and without organic ... totally confusing for me, why does everything have to be on the shelf? Yes, because customers like things to be complicated, aha moaned a somewhat simple-minded customer 🫣
Hi Kymba00, thanks for the question.
The star distribution is as follows:
Conventional eggs
Climate compatibility 3 stars
Animal welfare 4 stars
Organic eggs
Climate compatibility 3 stars
Animal welfare 5 stars
The organic eggs are rated higher for animal welfare because the laying hens have more space available or are kept in smaller flocks, for example. Best regards, your M-Infoline team

Why has the price of eggs increased?
Hello jajajaja, thank you for the question. Due to higher prices for chicken feed, we now pay a higher price per egg to our producers. This additional price has been passed on to the sales prices. Best regards, your M-Infoline team

Why have Swiss barn eggs been removed from the range? Migros is now forcing customers to buy Swiss free-range eggs. I have nothing against these eggs, but in my opinion it would make much more sense to remove imported eggs from sale instead! Switzerland has very strict regulations, including for barn hens. That is why I do not support this decision by Migros.
Hello catwoman91. Thank you for your message. We are currently in the process of converting our imported eggs, which is being done in stages by cooperative. Some stores already stock free-range imported eggs, and all stores should be converted by fall 2020. With this further development of our egg range, we are meeting the needs of many customers who want food from more animal-friendly farming.
