Hello, I buy this soil regularly and have been satisfied so far. But now, for the second time, I have lots of fungus gnats in the house after repotting the plants to overwinter indoors. What can I do? Last winter I ended up disposing of all the plants as the infestation was so severe. Thank you.
Hello ricasa, thank you for your request. Fungus gnats and their larvae are often a problem, especially when it comes to peat-free soils or peat-free organic soils (contains organic fertilizer). This problem does not occur to the same extent with peat-containing soils, as peat is a dead mass. However, we at Migros do not use peat as a raw material for our soils out of conviction, as this raw material comes from bogs and only grows very slowly below the earth's surface. Peatlands are not only the habitat of rare animal and plant species, but also popular recreational areas for people. Due to their nature, moorland areas provide natural protection against flooding. Moors are also important CO2 reservoirs. By not using peat as a raw material, we are making an active contribution to environmental protection. The fungus gnat is not supplied with the potting soil. It can be found where there is warmth, moisture and organic material. Attracted by the scent created by the conversion of organic material, it usually lays its eggs through the perforations in the bag while the soil is being stored. A fungus gnat infestation can also occur if the plant is watered too much, for example. Too much moisture is the main reason for fungus gnats. The peat-free soils look dry on the surface very quickly, which encourages watering again, although the water supply in deeper layers is still completely sufficient for the plants. Due to the mild weather, the fungus gnat has been active very early this year. Fungus gnats can be tolerated outdoors. Indoors and in the greenhouse, the larvae can be controlled with an insecticide in the irrigation water if necessary. We recommend the biological agent Migros-Bio Garden fungus gnat stop. Glue traps are good for monitoring infestations, but cannot control fungus gnats. A combination of several control options is therefore best. Another way to prevent fungus gnats from laying eggs in the substrate is to scatter a layer of granular sand at least 1 cm thick over the substrate. However, this layer must be kept as dry as possible. As female fungus gnats can lay up to 200 eggs in the substrate after mating, controlling fungus gnats can be somewhat tedious and it unfortunately takes some patience for all measures to take effect. Why are so many big fat grubs developing in this soil? New phenomenon, I've been buying this soil for years, but this year I'm unlucky.
Hello lugano29, thank you for your inquiry. The grubs are decomposers of organic matter. Compost is one of their preferred habitats and is also a component of peat-free soils. Beetles are attracted by the organic matter in the potting soil and lay their eggs in the soil. Soil is something of a natural habitat for these animals. This year, the weather has led to an increase in the number of beetles and therefore grubs. Grubs can be harmful to plants in flower pots, but they do not necessarily have to be. In principle, only larvae of certain beetle species count as pests: Cockchafer, fallow beetle, garden chafer. Control is possible with nematodes. Nematodes are tiny threadworms, also known as eelworms. There are species that transmit poisonous bacteria. If they are eaten by beetles and their larvae, they quickly die. This method of controlling white grubs is one of the most effective. Appropriate nematodes are available, such as Migros Bio Garden nematodes against white grubs. The order cards are available in every Do it + Garden branch. Other methods include collecting or repotting. We hope that we have been able to help you with this answer. Hello, I would like to know in which companies the soils sold by Migros are produced. Are there producers who add biochar and stone meal to the composts? How (often) are the composts aerated? Thank you very much. C.Kaufmann
Hello Mioplantrequest, thank you for your question. The majority of our own brands are produced in Germany in a soil plant in southern Germany. Some are also produced in a Swiss soil plant. This is noted accordingly on the packaging. Garden compost is produced by hot composting garden waste such as lawn cuttings, leaves and hedge cuttings for several months in a controlled process. The suppliers obtain the compost from various regional plants. There, the green material is collected regionally or delivered, checked and composted. The material is then sent to the soil plants as ready-sifted material and is used there as a component for mixtures or filled in pure form as garden compost. The compost mainly contains phosphorus and potash as nutrients. We are not aware of any use of biochar or rock flour as a composting accelerator. We cannot answer how often the compost is aerated.
