Natural pyrethrum, or pyrethrins, should not be confused with synthetically produced pyrethroids. In contrast to pyrethroids (artificially produced and problematic for cats), pyrethrins, i.e. the active components of natural pyrethrum, are broken down very quickly under the influence of light, air and heat. Natural pyrethrum is not absorbed into the treated material, nor does it evaporate at normal temperatures, so it is also not effective as a respiratory poison. The same active ingredient is also used in environmental sprays to control pests such as fleas for use in cat litter trays.
