I can't find the farming conditions on any of the new chicken packaging. Is there an overview by label somewhere?
Hello LaugenWind, Thank you for your inquiry and your interest in the husbandry conditions of our chicken products. To give you an overview:
- Organic standard: Our organic chickens are raised in small groups of no more than 500 animals. They live on organically managed Swiss farms and enjoy free range. Their feed comes from organic farming and the animals also peck at the meadows. The breed is slow-growing and robust, which contributes to natural and animal-friendly husbandry.
- Optigal standard: The Optigal program exceeds Swiss animal welfare regulations. It is based on close cooperation with around 600 farms in Switzerland and actively supports Swiss farmers. The animals live in particularly animal-friendly barns with access to a winter garden (BTS). Daylight, fresh air, pleasant temperatures, raised seating areas, and freedom of movement are integral parts of the husbandry. The chicks hatch and grow exclusively in Switzerland. The feed contains soy from northern Italy to promote climate friendliness. An independent inspection body regularly checks the entire program.
-Migros Switzerland: Our Swiss chicken meat complies with Swiss animal welfare regulations and offers the animals around 30% more space than the EU requirements. The chickens are kept in daylight, which meets their natural needs.
- Migros Import: Imported chicken meat also complies with Swiss animal welfare regulations. The animals live in daylight and have around 30% more space than the EU requirements. A Swiss certification body monitors the entire value chain, from animal husbandry and transport to slaughter and processing.
- Don Pollo Import Standard (Charcuterie): Charcuterie chicken meat also complies with Swiss animal welfare regulations. The animals live in daylight and enjoy around 30% more space than required by EU regulations. The entire value chain is monitored by a Swiss certification body.
85% of the fresh chicken meat sold at Migros comes from Swiss livestock farming, while 15% is imported. We want to ensure that all customers—regardless of their budget—have access to high-quality meat. Imported meat offers a lower-priced alternative without compromising on high quality and animal welfare standards.

Thank you very much! Am I correct in understanding that free-range is only available with the organic label?
Hello LaugenWind, at Optigal, the chickens have access to a winter garden. The Optigal program goes beyond Swiss animal welfare regulations – for Switzerland, produced in Switzerland. As part of a strong partnership, Optigal works with around 600 farms, thereby supporting Swiss farmers. Particularly animal-friendly housing with access to a winter garden (BTS), Swiss origin, whenever possible from the respective cooperative region (AdR), rearing on carefully selected farms, daylight, fresh air, pleasant temperatures, raised seating areas, and freedom of movement are among the features of the Optigal program. Chicks hatch and grow up in Switzerland. The soy in the feed comes from nearby northern Italy. The Optigal program is monitored by an independent inspection body.
The other brands are produced in accordance with Swiss animal welfare regulations. Important to note: The Swiss Animal Welfare Ordinance differs from EU regulations in the following ways: around 30-40% more space per chicken, natural day-night rhythm thanks to the installation of windows, short transport times, and ensuring respectful treatment of animals during loading, transport, and slaughter. Best regards, your M-Infoline team
