Why are there potatoes from Egypt in Migros at all? I'm very careful not to buy them. Now it's happened to me. Why do I always have to read where they come from and can't rely on Migros to sell regional products? What a shame

Hello karin253, thank you for your question. It is our policy to always source a product from the geographically closest destination. Of course, availability and the high quality and product safety we require must be guaranteed. If a product is in season in Switzerland and there is sufficient local produce available, we source our products from within Switzerland. As a rule, depending on the size of the Swiss harvest, we source around 80 % to 95 % of our total potato requirements from domestic production. In a normal harvest year, we have a good to very good supply of domestic stock from the previous year until around April / May. From then on, we import potatoes from Israel / Egypt and European countries such as Cyprus and Spain to ensure the required quantities. In spring, there is also customer demand for fresh potatoes. These imports take place within the framework of WTO quotas (World Trade Organization). This means that these quotas oblige Switzerland to guarantee other countries a corresponding market entry. Similar to this question, I was surprised to see that the CO2 balance (according to Migros grade) on the pack is 5 stars. How is it possible that something from abroad has the best score, what about those from Switzerland? They are not harvested in a greenhouse are they? Thanks in advance!

Hello nadecham, thank you for the question. In climate assessment, the emissions per product are calculated and stated in CO2 equivalents. This means that the emissions of all greenhouse gases are taken into account - but converted into CO2. However, transportation is of little importance from an ecological point of view. The decisive factor is agricultural production. The emission values were calculated by the companies treeze and intep and then verified by myclimate. We bought Otolia BIO potatoes today. I have noticed that these potatoes from the producer Ueli Burri in 1792 Cordast have been treated with a sprout inhibitor, or at the packaging stage. Can organic potatoes be treated with sprout inhibitors? Thank you for your answer

Hello Rigihell, thank you for the photo. It has helped us a lot. No sprout-inhibiting agents based on synthetic substances such as chlorpropham are used during or before the storage of organic potatoes. The supplier uses an agent concentrate based on the plant peppermint (100% organic), which promises the same effect. In general, our suppliers must comply with very strict food safety requirements. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Best wishes and happy holidays, your M-Infoline team
