Why this CO2 check? Does it come from China? Very confusing!
Why is there 5 stars for Co2 in the sustainability check? The product originally comes from China? How can that be climate-friendly?
Hello Bcallan, thank you for the question. The climate assessment is carried out across the entire product range. For example, fruit is not compared with fruit, but fruit is compared with meat products or dairy products. Or in this case, sugar substitutes are compared with the other products. The emissions per product are calculated and stated in CO2 equivalents. This means that the emissions of all greenhouse gases are taken into account, but converted into CO2. However, transportation (in the case of this product via land or sea freight) and packaging are of little importance from an ecological point of view - the decisive factor is agricultural production. You can find out more at M-Check: simply sustainable shopping - Migros. Best regards, your M-Infoline team
This answer convinces me even less! How can you compare such a mix of different products (fruit with meat or milk)! Isn't this rather a kind of "greenwashing" to make it look a bit better on the M-check? I have learned from this that the M-check should not be trusted at all! What a pity!
Hello Bcallan, thank you for your feedback. We apologize if there has been any confusion. Together with the life cycle assessment company intep, we have calculated the carbon footprint of our products. The entire life cycle assessment of the product is included in the calculation: from cultivation, the use of water and fertilizer and animal feed through to transport and packaging. Emission values from internationally recognized databases were assigned to all product categories. For example, an average value for apples was used for each apple in the range. For climate-relevant areas such as meat, we have gone even further and created specific life cycle assessments for the individual products. This allows the value chain to be mapped in detail. These values were then used to classify the product range on the climate scale from 1 to 5 stars. Beef, for example, receives 1 star, as the life cycle assessment corresponds to > 20 kg CO2-eq / kg beef. Fruit has much lower emissions at < 1 kg CO2-eq/kg and therefore receives 5 stars. Around 50 % of Migros products receive 1 star for climate. Only around 5 % of products receive 5 stars. This percentage distribution of the product range is not set in stone. This distribution may improve over time if individual dimensions are optimized. Best regards, your M-Infoline team
