The keeping of Swiss dairy cows is strictly regulated by the laws of the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office: The cows either live in a tethered stall, where they must always have access to the outdoors, or in groups in loose housing. Sufficient space to lie down and eat is also prescribed. In an animal welfare assessment by a specialist institute, Swiss dairy cows were awarded 3 out of 5 animal welfare stars for these minimum requirements.
