Chicken meat 90% (Brazil) a basic question as a Migros cooperative member: .why are all Migros frozen poultry products from Brazil? and not from Europe or Switzerland? .what controls are carried out locally? (animal welfare, diet, antibiotics) .what are the CO2 emissions compared to European poultry? (including the clearing of rainforests!)
I think there was a post saying that I don't think there's enough chicken from the CH market to cover everything, and the price would be massively higher... and not everyone can afford the prices?
Hello PatJ, thank you for contacting us. Enclosed you will find our statement:
Sourcing chicken from Brazil is a question of availability. We already stock various chicken products made from Swiss meat under the Optigal brand, and in some cases also Don Pollo. In future, we will switch to other products that are from Switzerland. The main problem is the quantity - we don't get that much chicken at once.
Production sources its poultry meat from specialized Swiss import companies, including from South America. In Brazil, our importer has been working with us for many years to define a procurement area from which meat can be supplied to him. This area is located south of the northern border of the states of Mato Grosso do Sul, Goias and Minas Gerais and therefore well south of the Brazilian Amazon region. The procurement of poultry meat by our upstream supplier takes place in this defined procurement area.
Migros chicken meat from Brazil is part of a special import program. Under this program, suppliers in Brazil must produce in accordance with Swiss animal welfare standards and require corresponding certification. Specifically, this means that the broiler chickens in Brazil must have daylight, raised seating areas, litter, straw bales and an outdoor climate area. In addition, the stocking density is limited to the Swiss standard, which is significantly lower than the global standard. These requirements are checked annually by an independent, accredited inspection organization.
The animals from which our meat supplier buys the poultry meat in Brazil are not grazed, but kept in open barns, which are comparable to AKBs in Switzerland. Their floors are 100% littered. Depending on their age and weight, the fattening animals receive optimally composed rations of grain and soy. The meat is transported by ship from South America to European ports. From there, the meat is transported to Switzerland by train.
With regard to the information on the packaging, you will find the country of origin for each product as well as an animal welfare and climate assessment with the "M-Check", which also takes into account the transportation to Switzerland.
Best regards, your M-Infoline team
