1) Recently, the bananas have become smaller and smaller, and no longer as big as they used to be, and it feels like the quality has deteriorated 2) Aldi/Lidl and Coop have lowered the price to 1.30

Why plastic packaging?

Hello blastingcap, thank you for your request and your patience. It's true that M-Budget bananas are currently packaged in plastic. We've already started doing a few tests (with a banderole). If these prove positive, we'll proceed with the change. Sincerely, your M-Infoline team

Who treats these babies with vegan pesticides?

Edited

Hello Michi2000, thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately, we are not clear what you mean by "vegan" pesticides. We can tell you that the M-Budget bananas are normal, conventionally produced bananas. The use of pesticides is permitted here. In general, our suppliers must adhere to very strict food safety standards. We and our suppliers check our range of fruit and vegetables on a random and risk-based basis. In doing so, we ensure that the requirements are met and the quality of the products is right. We also carry out on-site inspections at our producers. In addition to the legal requirements, Migros also requires its suppliers to comply with SwissGAP (or GlobalGAP) and Migros specifications. Best regards, your M-Infoline team

What are these bananas treated with before, during and after harvesting? Which bananas become "M-budget bananas"? Does it depend on size and shape? Are there sometimes organic bananas among them?

Hello Anosh, thank you for your inquiry about M-Budget bananas. M-Budget bananas are a so-called "no name" product. There are no brand names or additional labels that influence the price. Furthermore, M-Budget bananas do not have the uniformity of Chiquita or Bio Max Havelaar bananas. They have an irregular shape and a higher proportion of optical quality defects. In this way, we enable producers to offer bananas with visual defects. Otherwise, banana farmers would have to sell them at the lowest prices on the domestic market or sell them to the processing industry. In addition, with relatively large units (around 1.5 to 1.8 kg), we can save costs in the areas of packaging and handling. M-Budget bananas are comparable to conventional bananas. They are harvested when the fruit is still green. They are transported by ship and overland. They are then ripened in the ripening plant. Theoretically, it is indeed possible to find organic bananas among the M-Budget bananas, but in reality it is certainly rather rare. The warm and humid climate and the fertile soils in the tropical growing regions of Latin America are ideal for banana cultivation. These conditions are also ideal for pests, diseases and weeds that compete with banana plants for light and nutrients. We follow very strict pesticide control procedures: - We only use chemicals that comply with national regulations and EU regulations - In addition, all our fruit is certified with the Swiss GAP restrictions, a stricter version of the international Global GAP certification. You can find more information at the following link: http://www.swissgap.ch/fruechte-gemuese-kartoffeln.html. - We use the most sustainable and effective methods to control pests, diseases and weeds. Whenever possible, we use natural methods to prevent the growth of weeds - All employees wear personal protective equipment and are fully trained in the safe use of pesticides Best regards, your M-Infoline team

Dear ladies, dear gentlemen, how come M-Budget bananas and Mini Max Havelaar bananas are packaged in plastic bags? Bananas can be safely sold without packaging because of their peel which prevents contamination of the food. The grocery trade causes a lot of consumption of packaging products that go directly into the trash, wouldn't it be better at least where plastic can be avoided unnecessarily? Thank you for your consideration of my proposal. With best regards. Sara F.

Hi Sara F., we thank you for your question. For M-Budget products, the priority is price. That is why we opted for the pouch packaging process. It is indeed cheaper and saves costs. The process with hooks on the other hand, being manual, generates more costs. Baby bananas are packed in a thin bag because they are very delicate. We have already been committed to various environmental issues for many years and are continually setting new goals, for example, environmentally friendly packaging and a rational recycling system. The commonly held view that plastic is more harmful to the environment than wood or paper is not so true. To identify the most environmentally friendly packaging, we calculate the eco-balances of different packaging solutions, which show the environmental impact throughout a packaging's life cycle. They are also useful in comparing paper and plastic. Obviously a kilogram of paper is more environmentally friendly than a kilogram of plastic, but it normally takes much more paper to package a product: Therefore the eco-balance of plastic packaging is often better. Fundamental is the proper disposal of packaging and products. In Switzerland almost all waste is recycled or valorized in modern incinerators. We support customers in disposal by offering a large take-back system, far exceeding what is required by law. In our opinion, the total renunciation of plastics would not be ecologically sensible, let alone completely feasible. It is important for us to keep material consumption to a minimum. Sincerely, Your M-Infoline Team

I think the Migros budget bananas are great! They are a great size, well packaged (the packs used to be a bit too big) and a fantastic price for a "banana-eating family". I would like to know whether I have to have a guilty conscience when I buy them, e.g. child labor, poor wages, etc., or can I continue to enjoy buying them? I look forward to an answer.
Kind regards
J.G.
