Eggs, we need ...!

Eier, wir brauchen ...!

Yes, yesterday I needed eggs again. Not in a semi-figurative sense, however, but I was standing in front of the egg shelf at Migros in Bern and was undecided for a long time. Among the choices were: 6 Swiss eggs in a carton, free-range, 53g+, animal welfare 4 out of 5 stars, climate compatibility 3 out of 5 stars, price CHF 3.00 6 Bernese eggs in a carton, free-range, 53g+, animal welfare 4 out of 5 stars, climate compatibility 3 out of 5 stars, price CHF 3.70 The Bernese eggs do not come from hens scratching in front of the wooden farmhouse depicted on the carton, but from a large 18,000-hen barn in Kirchlindach, which delivers around 17,000 eggs to the packing plant every day. Now the question: Does anyone happen to know what the additional price of a whopping 23.3% for eggs "from the region" is due to, apart from the shorter transportation route (slight irony)? Who knows, if I was aware of this, I might even be happy to spend the extra 70 centimes. Yesterday, however, like many other undecided people, I decided to go for Swiss eggs for the time being.
