Dual-purpose chicken

Zweinutzungshuhn

Can you tell me whether Migros is involved in the introduction/research of products from "dual-purpose hens" and to what extent? How can I tell on the shelf whether eggs or meat come from such animals?
Given the tragedy of how male chicks are treated, I have greatly reduced my consumption of poultry products - but such eggs or meat would ease my conscience somewhat. Please provide more information on the subject.

And regarding the statement by one of the top poultry association people who said that male chicks don't fit into the "system" .... what else can you say? That such people don't fit into the system either, perhaps. Shameful, such a statement.

Looking forward to information and clarification! Best regards.

Hello Toffie

Thanks for your message. Yes, Migros is supporting a project to find out whether dual-purpose chickens could be used. We are working together with competent partners such as Aviforum. However, there are no final findings yet, so we can't say any more.

We also support prenatal diagnostics, i.e. sex determination in the egg.

We are following and supporting both projects very closely, as we are also interested in the continuous improvement of animal husbandry conditions. As mentioned, however, there is not yet enough knowledge that we can apply.

Kind regards

Oh, I would still think it would be great if there were eggs on sale that were specifically declared as coming from hens older than 1 year. They should be more expensive so that the egg producer can bridge the time when the hens are moulting with the additional income. This is a wish/dream.

Yes, I would also be interested in the dual-purpose chicken thing. When I used to buy eggs from the farmer, the hens were still several years old. These old laying hens were then slaughtered at some point and were then called "soup hens". They had to be cooked for two or three hours, but the resulting chicken fricassée was brilliantly good and delicious.

I then indulged in such fond memories of long-lived happy chickens and their tragic end and actually found frozen chicken meat in the Migros frozen food section that was labeled as "soup chicken". I bought it and cooked it - but even after 3 hours, apart from enormous amounts of fat, necks, hindquarters and bones, there was hardly any meat worth mentioning. I don't think it contains any spent laying hens, so my question is: what kind of chickens does Migros' "soup chicken" meat consist of? And since laying hens are generally not only born with necks and rumps - where are the rest of these chickens that would be needed for the chicken fricassee?

PS: by the way, I thought there would be no need to use the male chicks because the eggs can be x-rayed before they hatch and all the males can be sorted out beforehand and sold as normal eggs.

Dear Migros,

Do good and talk about it. The four-letter competition is leading the way...:

What is the current state of affairs at Migros?

Kind regards

Is Migros also working on this at the moment?

Hello@bLaah

Thank you for your message. @EEnergyis right, there are already projects underway. Tanja enquired about this in early summer, but unfortunately there was no reliable information to report yet. I will be happy to ask for you.

Now it has worked out faster with a feedback. However, I can't say much new: the projects in which Migros is involved have not yet been completed. As soon as this is the case, Migros will analyze the results in detail and plan the next steps.

Kind regards

Tanja

Thank you @Tanja_Migros for asking!
I'm looking forward to seeing what comes of the projects.
