On TV you can see again and again how goods are destroyed in the supermarket, but what makes me wonder about Migros is the sell by and expiration date.
Let's take the American Shake. I have one that is for sale until 25.07 and is to be consumed on 30.07.
So why is the shake no longer sold 5 days earlier? Why not just print an expiration date?
That works for other manufacturers too.

Perishable goods are always marked with two dates: "For sale by" and "To be consumed by". There are always one to two days between these two dates. It is to be expected that the product will not be consumed immediately, but will be kept in the refrigerator for a few days.

1 The best-before date is the date until which a foodstuff retains its specific properties under appropriate storage conditions.

1 The best-before date must be indicated on foodstuffs.

I think the difference between the two dates is a good thing. What I find much sadder are the many items that are thrown away even though they are still good. Just because they are 'expired'. Or because the packaging has a dent. Because the vegetables aren't the right shape or size, or have a small, pimple-like spot. In other parts of the world, people are fighting for food and here certain people feel good when they can simply throw away unopened or leftover things.
That's why I support campaigns like those of the French supermarket 'Intermarché', food sharing or 'Güllelädelie'. Because looks aren't everything, and not just for people.

Istanbul is right - we are obliged to print two dates and allow some time in between so that customers can keep the product at home for a few days after purchase before consuming it.
Items that can no longer be sold because they have already passed the "sell by" date are given to Migros employees or organizations such as "Tischlein deck dich" at a reduced price.
It is also very important to us to reduce food waste as much as possible. We try to do this wherever possible.

I have a different problem, and it concerns the packaged lettuce.
Why the hell is a sell by and use by date printed on it that nobody cares about?
It would be smarter and more sensible to have a PACKING DATE and a sell by date, so you don't buy washed lettuce that is already starting to ferment in the packaging!

Lettuce
The main issue here is the microbial load, hence the two dates. Cutting the lettuce damages the plant cells and thus provides an entry point for bacteria, which can multiply well on the leaking sap. This is not the case with uncut, fresh fruit/vegetables.
Personally, I never look at the dates at home: I look at the lettuce and smell it, then decide... I've never had any complaints about a salad ;-)

The packaging date on the cut salads is not mandatory according to the Food Labeling Ordinance. This means that suppliers can affix the date voluntarily. I will be happy to pass on your request to the product range managers so that they can check this additional information.
On the pricing of smaller and larger portions: We are aware that there are more and more one- and two-person households and that the need for smaller packs is increasing accordingly. Migros is therefore constantly introducing products in smaller packs. However, the packaging and production costs for smaller portions are often barely lower than for the usual portions. The small portions are therefore more expensive in comparison. This is why many consumers continue to prefer the usual pack sizes.
The issue of food waste is also topical at Migros and is an important issue for us. 98.6 percent of the food that Migros offers in its stores and restaurants is also sold or given away as food: at regular or reduced prices to customers and employees. Or the food is distributed free of charge to charitable organizations such as "Tischlein deck dich" or "Schweizer Tafeln".
Only 1.4 percent of the food offered by Migros (Migros stores and restaurants) is not used as food: 1.3% of this is used to produce animal feed (0.3%), biogas (0.9%) and compost (0.1%). Only 0.2% ends up as waste in the waste incineration plant (WIP).
