Migros is also involved: http://www.srf.ch/sendungen/kassensturz-espresso/waehlen-sie-den-etikettenschwindel-2016

The "Originario" rice from Migros costs 2 francs 40 per kilo in the neutral packaging. Migros also sells the same "Originario" as Japanese sushi rice in a cardboard box: it costs 6 francs 60 per kilo - almost three times more.

The same applies to selection products. Very often it's just a different packaging to the normal products, but the price is a lot higher. There was once a test with yogurt. The exact same yoghurt was sold once as normal yoghurt and once in Selection packaging. That's just bullshit on the customer and many customers still fall for it. I've never bought a Selection product and I tell everyone I know to stay away from this line.

That's exactly the report I meant Bodenseeknusperli. Thank you!

Hello everyone

We are aware that Saitaku sushi rice is a little more expensive than rice pudding in a kilo pack. One reason for this is that the rice is offered in smaller packaging. Small packs are always slightly more expensive than large packs. In the case of the Saitaku product, the packaging is much more elaborate (with a vacuum bag and outer carton with recipes). However, the decisive factor is that the Saitaku product is a branded article for which the majority of the price is covered by the manufacturer's and brand owner's quality guarantee. The comparison item rice pudding is a Migros own-brand item (M-Classic), for which we want to offer the best possible performance at the best possible price. Here we have the entire value chain under control with our own industry (the Riseria rice mill) and are very happy to pass this advantage on to our customers. In the case of branded products (in this case Saitaku), we receive a price from the supplier that we can only influence to a very limited extent. Nevertheless, we have decided to offer the article because it is important in the topic of "preparing sushi" and helps the customer to find his way around immediately, because he can find all the relevant articles in the same place and can use the instructions and recipes on the packaging, which are not listed on the inexpensive product from M-Classic. I hope this helps you. Best regards, Tabi

Hello Tabi_MIgros

The Kassensturz article suggests that the M-Classic rice and the sushi rice in question come from the same production facility. You write that the M-Classic product comes from the Riseria rice mill, which suggests that although the two types of rice are the same, they come from different countries and different processors.

Am I right in assuming that the branded product does not come from Reismühle Riseria?
Where is theM-Classic rice grown and where does the branded product come from?

@Tabi_MigrosYes, we could already read your text in the article. The fact is that Migros (and Coop) always like to tell us how they want to take action against overpriced branded products. This is one such case. Nevertheless, they offer such a totally overpriced product. What is supposed to be better about branded rice?

If you weren't only interested in the big margin, you would put your own cheap rice on the Asian shelf in other colors and smaller portions and charge a little more. And remove the rip-off product. THAT would be in the customer's interest.

Dear Tabi

Just the fact that you use the word rice pudding means to me that something is wrong. It's the same rice. The M-Classic rice costs CHF 2.40/kg. If we add 60 Rp per 500 gr. package for the branded article (which would already be a lot), that's Fr. 3.60/kg. The branded article is sold for Fr. 6.60/kg.

Not a bad margin for Ethnic Distribution in Rotkreuz! I wouldn't be surprised if Migros and Coop were involved in this company. Funnily enough, Saitaku products are only sold in Switzerland and the UK. As I said, there's something fishy going on. Migros was rightly awarded the "fraudulent label 2016"!

Hello Frenchman

You can see why Tabi uses the word "rice pudding" for the M-Classic rice Originario on the packaging and here.

Hi Geh-heim-Dienst

Right, I overlooked that. My mistake. Delete this sentence. The rest remains the same.

A very good example of the fact that you shouldn't go for any brands and labels but compare them yourself. Very often, M Budget or M Classic products are in no way inferior to expensive brand products in terms of taste. The products that I always buy in Migros and not elsewhere are almost all Migros' own productions.

I wouldn't want Migros to sell overpriced brand or label products. On the other hand, if it meets the needs of some customers ... as long as I don't have to buy them ...

Hello everyone

To your questions:

@Geh-heim-Dienst: No, the Saitaku branded product does not come from the Migros Riseria plant. Saitaku sushi rice is a third-party brand product (the Saitaku producer selects the appropriate batches of rice and processes them further).

In contrast, with the M-Classic product, the rice is selected, cleaned and processed into the finished product by Migros' own Riseria rice mill. This means that Migros has the entire value chain under control and can pass on the resulting cost benefits to customers in the form of lower sales prices.

Both the M-Classic and the Saitaku rice come from Italy.

@stecki: There are no plans to adjust the range at the moment. However, we have passed on your feedback to the product managers.

Best wishes and happy holidays to you, Tabitha
