Why can I never find floury potatoes on sale? I only ever find waxy ones open. Why is that?
Why can I never find floury potatoes on sale? I only ever find waxy ones open. Why is that?
Good morning @chrit
Hmm that's a good question. I'll have to check with the people in charge. Which store do you shop at? Best regards, Nicole
Good morning @chrit
I have received feedback from the store: The reason is that the demand for floury potatoes in the open sale is too small. Unfortunately, the space in the open shop is very limited, so there is not enough room for 2 types of potatoes. This would also quickly lead to confusion. I hope I have been able to help you with this. Kind regards, Nicole
Thanks for the clarification. Even if I'm not really happy with the reasoning. Floury potatoes can be used for just as many potato products as waxy potatoes. But the main thing is that we have 4 apple varieties in the open range ?
Migros' response is really incomprehensible. Marketing reasons will be behind it, as everywhere else. What counts is not what the customer wants, but rather considerations as to how the most willingly paid amount can be achieved. There are even many chefs who only buy floury or, as they say, rather floury potatoes. If you look carefully, you will sometimes even find offers where the same variety is classified as both firm and soft-boiled.
It is quite annoying that the potatoes on sale are NEVER labeled with the variety. After all, there are considerable differences. (And not just in the name).
It is equally annoying that potatoes are placed in about 3 - 5 locations, what are Migros' considerations behind this?
Which also annoys me. With the floury potatoes, I am forced to buy a 2.5 kg bag straight away. Fortunately "only" 1 kg bags of organic potatoes.
For a small household, 2.5 kg is too much! Even 1 kg is often too much.
That's why I would prefer open sale!
Loxiran sums it up perfectly. 1 kg is too much for our household, so I would like to have some on open sale. Surely that should be possible?
One more thing: space would be created quickly. The bags of pre-packed potatoes fill a whole wall: there are 500g baskets, 1kg bags, 1.5kg bags, 2kg bags and maybe others. You could easily reduce that to offer a box of floury potatoes openly. Can't you follow up on that?
You'll bite on the granite. The marketing department has given the order that the lack of space must be used as an excuse for all customer requests, categorically and like a prayer wheel - for years. You can cite countless examples of how wastefully the oh-so-limited space is sometimes used. Migipedia calls this "taking critical customers seriously".
PS: With the exception of a few weeks in summer (early potato season), I also only buy floury potatoes. Fortunately, organic potatoes are available in 1 kg sacks, but even then I have to hurry to use them up because they sprout and shrivel after just a few days. Unfortunately, I don't have a storage facility with optimal temperatures. I'd give a lot if I could buy as many fresh potatoes as I use immediately.
But it's just as much a fad as soft bread. At some point a few years ago, someone started promoting watery potatoes as the norm (Amandine and what they're all called...), and people are already chasing after this stuff. Even Migusto recently recommended waxy potatoes for rösti. Yikes, my stomach turns, have such "cooks" ever actually eaten a real, crispy rösti?
