"The lost childhood memory" or: gingerbread mix - what is that, please?
"Die verlorene Kindheitserinnerung" oder: Lebkuchenmischung - was ist das den bitte?!
Dear Migros
First of all, as a Migros child, I appreciate Migros and its product range. Especially many of their own products in their range.
Today, however, I was noticeably disappointed, but all this started much earlier. Probably somewhere between 1995 and 2005, when I was at least three years old. Back then, our mother would lovingly shop (at Migros) for my two siblings and me to make us big and strong.
This also included sweet treats, such as the lovely selection of Christmas cookies from Migros / Midor during the cold season. We were as happy as little children back then (we were too) when the butter biscuits (flower-shaped) or gingerbread biscuits were available again. They even had to be delivered under our mother's supervision, otherwise we would have devoured them all at once - especially my older brother, who was particularly fond of them (which makes the following dramatic turn of events in this text all the worse). Even though our mother always said that the ones she baked herself were much better, which was somehow true.... but somehow not.
Now, a good 20 years later, me and my brother are allowed to decide for ourselves which biscuits we want to eat and when. We are great bakers :) but we still prefer the store-bought ones from Migros.
My brother and I met up about a week ago and had a little chat.
-------> Dramatic turnaround from here <--------
Until we got onto the subject of Christmas, Migros, Guezli and finally Armageddon.
My brother said that the gingerbread biscuits we loved so much were no longer in the range.
I replied in a trivializing and self-assured manner that it was just the packaging that was new, that a few other gingerbread biscuits had been mixed in and that the "new recipe" tasted the same anyway.
I was so sure that I even claimed he was just that fussy and only he would notice a difference. Here's the official apology for this brother: "Sorry about that!"
He insisted that the new ones just wouldn't taste good, so yesterday (20.10.16) I was standing in front of a shelf filled with these new "gingerbread mix" cookies in one of their stores.
For all fellow customers, yes, one of those shelves where you ask yourself, "What are the Christmas items again? It's only just summer, isn't it?" Yes, exactly, and it's usually fluffily labeled "Current" at the top.
Back to the topic: So I grabbed a pack and was really looking forward to it. I thought about my brother and that I would soon be able to tell him that the gingerbread tasted just like it used to. Which unfortunately didn't turn out to be the case today... :(
--------> Even more dramatic turn of events <--------
I opened the packet, grabbed the first cookie and then.... first of all a question mark, why is this cookie completely covered in chocolate? Never mind, I trust in the good taste of Migros, take a bite and.... well. I then simply ate another cookie in the hope that this one would taste like the ones I knew or, above all, that it would cover up the taste of the previous gingerbread... Nope, so I grabbed another one (all three were totally different in appearance, by the way, so I was expecting redemption every time) and..... NAJA. The last one I reached for was the milk chocolate, because I knew I liked it and I was rid of the unpleasant taste of the cookies.
Now, a good 15 text messages later with my brother, I'm sitting at home in front of my laptop writing this text.
1. HE WAS RIGHT
2. now I'm eating some foam rubber mushrooms made in Holland
3. actually I was looking forward to the gingerbread cookies :(
Conclusion of the story: Please bring the old Guezli back into the range, for the Migros children of yesterday and the adults of today!
Best wishes from me and my brother :)
... and of course on behalf of everyone who feels understood here!
