Hello, at our store, we give away goods from a charitable organization free of charge. Staff also have the opportunity to buy such goods at a 75% discount. Bread is returned to Jowa. The remaining food is returned and sent to Biogas.

98.6 percent of the food that Migros offers in its stores and restaurants in 2015 is also sold or distributed as food - at regular prices,
at reduced prices or free of charge to charitable organizations!
Only just 1.4 percent of the food offered by Migros (Migros stores and restaurants) is not used as food:
1.3 percent is recycled:
0.1% ends up as waste in the waste incineration plant (KVA)
All food that we have to throw away means a loss for us on the one hand and costs on the other. That is why Migros tries to minimize the value of
food waste as low as possible.
@ivan92:I will clarify your question about returning bread with the people responsible at JOWA. I'll let you know as soon as I know more.

Then today (01.07.2017) I had such a "0.1% case". Bern region, product "Brönnti Creme" AdR in a 500 g tub. For sale until 26.06., to be consumed by 29.06.
I asked the saleswoman (purely rhetorically of course, I already knew the answer from previous cases) whether I could get the product at a lower price. "No, we are no longer allowed to sell it". "So it will be thrown away?" I asked. The answer was: "Yes!" Too bad, because experience has shown that if the packaging is not damaged and the cold chain has been maintained, such a product can easily be enjoyed for more than a week after the expiry date without any risk. Nevertheless, the very friendly saleswoman apologized and also thought it was a shame, but that was just the law.
Suggestion as motivation for the staff to pay closer attention to the dates and sell items at reduced prices in good time: If a customer finds an expired product, they should receive an identical (fresh) product for free. This is how it was done at Merkur in Vienna and I think it's a good idea, also as a thank you to the attentive customer who does the staff's work by clearing out the expired goods.
