Dear Anor, the answer (and truth) is that Cumulus statistically (and algorithmically) evaluates your shopping behavior. If you underspend, you get smaller multiplier coupons (always related to the "supermarkets"). Had the same suspicion a few years ago, but found out that my friends, who as a family of 4 had a much larger Migros shopping requirement (including fashion department, non-food in general etc.) than I did at the time as a 1-person household, received 2 (yellow) 5x Cumulus vouchers at the same time as me.
I now do it in such a way that I write down purchases that I can plan in advance, as they occur regularly but not immediately, on a "Cumulus" list (offline of course, usually even on paper, so that Migros can't apply any algorithms in the background) and then make a larger purchase all together. Of course, I can't take advantage of certain promotions that don't occur in the 3x cumulus week (i.e. my shopping date). But I've also noticed that the 3x or 5x vouchers are mutually exclusive to other multipliers (such as "20x novelty"): So a 20x Cumulus novelty is not counted again 3x or even 23x instead of 20x. In general, you should pay more attention to what you really need than how many Cumulus points you can earn with it. After all, 1 Cumulus point is only worth 1 centime, don't forget.
