Hello,

I'm guessing below that a question has been asked about the arsenic contained in many rice products. Unfortunately, I don't read German well enough to understand the content of the answer.
Could you please answer this question: how much arsenic is in the rice cakes sold at Migros?

Thank you for your attention and for your reply.

Hello Customer
Thank you very much for your message about our previous comment. Here is the translation of this text:
When assessing the acrylamide content, we follow the European guideline values. For the assessment of M-Classic integral rice cakes, we basically follow the guideline values for cookies and zwiebacks intended for infants and small children, i.e. 200 µg/kg . Both supplier controls and our own measurements have shown that we have never exceeded this guideline value.
For arsenic, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) ruled in 2009 that the tolerable weekly intake limit of 15 µg arsenic per kg body weight would no longer be adequate, but has not yet set a new reference value. Reducing exposure to inorganic arsenic is basically recommended. At the same time, however, it is stressed that even more specific data will need to be determined for the purposes of risk assessment. As a result, neither the EU nor Switzerland currently has a limit value for arsenic in rice.
China - the classic rice country - has set a limit value for arsenic in rice of 0.15 mg/kg . If we take the Chinese limit value of 0.15 mg/kg and the reference value of 15µg/kg body weight per week as a basis for calculation, a 10 kg child could consume 1 kg or 125 pieces of M-Classic brown rice cakes per week.
Given the small quantities consumed, there is no risk in eating these rice cakes.
We hope this answers your question and wish you a nice day.
Best regards Your M-Infoline team

Dear Migros

I eat a roll of rice cakes every day. Now I have found out about the increased arsenic and acrylamide levels in rice cakes that were discovered 2 years ago.
In your reply you write that no "deviation from the quality standard" was found "in the parameters tested".
This statement unsettles me. You do not comment on whether acrylamite or arsenic are among the "parameters investigated", nor how high your own quality standard is (in figures).

Thank you very much for your reply.

Dear guest
Thank you for your inquiry. We can well understand your concerns.
We base our assessment of acrylamide on the European guideline values. For the assessment of M-Classic wholegrain rice cakes, the guideline value for cookies and rusks for infants and young children, which is 200 µg/kg, is generally applicable. This guideline value has never been exceeded either in the supplier's controls or in our own controls.
For arsenic, the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) classified the tolerable weekly intake of 15 µg arsenic per kg body weight as no longer appropriate in 2009, but has not yet set a different reference value. It is generally recommended that exposure to inorganic arsenic should be reduced. At the same time, however, it is pointed out that even more specific data are required for a risk assessment. As a result, there is still no limit value for arsenic in rice in either the EU or Switzerland.
In contrast, China - as a classic rice country - has set a limit value of 0.15 mg/kg for inorganic arsenic in rice. If the Chinese limit of 0.15 mg/kg and the reference value of 15 µg/kg body weight per week are taken as a basis, then a child with a body weight of 10 kg would be allowed to eat 1 kg or 125 pieces of M-Classic whole grain rice cakes per week.
Due to the small amount consumed, there is therefore no risk in consuming these rice cakes.
We wish you continued enjoyment and wish you all the best from the M-Infoline team.

Dear Migros
I would like sensitive products such as these rice cakes to be tested by independent laboratories rather than by you. And not directly, but via the cantonal food authorities. I would also like you, Migros, to publish these test results in full. This is the only way to create transparency, trust and safety for consumers.

Dear guest
Thank you for your feedback.
Migros examines its product range at random as part of its self-monitoring obligation. These analyses are carried out by Swiss Quality Testing Services (SQTS). This is an independent laboratory accredited by the Swiss Accreditation Service SAS in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025.
We do not provide test results as a matter of principle. However, we can assure you that we will immediately examine appropriate measures if legal or stricter internal Migros requirements are violated.
We hope this information has been helpful and wish you a pleasant rest of the week. Your M-Infoline Team

From Ökotest.de

Practical, light, wholesome - rice cakes have a good image. Parents give them to their toddlers as a snack between meals. And many adults also reach for the crispy slices made from plain rice and other cereals to satisfy their hunger. This is because rice cakes are low in calories and an alternative for people with gluten intolerance.

The production process is similar to that of popcorn: depending on the variety, the ingredients are mixed and placed in special round baking tins. Heat and pressure cause the moisture contained in the grain to expand until the rice grains burst. The starch that escapes "glues" all the ingredients together in a matter of seconds. The product is many times larger than the original grains.

But are rice cakes really as healthy as the manufacturers would have us believe? In the first ÖKO-TEST rice cakes almost three years ago, we found that some products contained too much arsenic and acrylamide. In the meantime, we have been able to search for organic and inorganic arsenic, the actually toxic form, separately in a special laboratory. For our current test, we therefore had 20 rice cakes tested again for arsenic and other harmful substances. We also asked ourselves whether the salt content was problematic - young children in particular do not yet tolerate salt very well.

The test result

Unfortunately, we have to pull the "ripcord": All waffles contain carcinogenic acrylamide and arsenic - mostly in "elevated" or "highly elevated" amounts. More than half fail with "poor" or "unsatisfactory". The product as such and sloppiness on the part of the manufacturer are "to blame" for the poor results. Compared to the last ÖKO-TEST rice cakes, the level of harmful substances has increased. We can only recommend the "good" wafers from Hipp - but only for occasional consumption.

Hello guest
Thank you for your message and your interest.
Migros regularly checks its products for compliance with legal requirements as part of its self-inspection obligation and on a risk basis. To date, no deviation from the quality standard has ever been detected in the wholemeal rice cakes in the parameters tested.
We wish you an enjoyable weekend. Your M-Infoline Team

I have been eating rice cakes regularly for many years. They are the best snack for me between meals. I would ask you to offer more of this product as well.

That's another one of those answers that isn't true at all! It just makes me furious! Like today's report in the MM magazine, where it is claimed that the optimization of products is in line with customer needs.
Many products that customers increasingly want and prefer are disappearing. Spelt in particular is a type of wheat that is best tolerated by most people.
So spare us such answers and justifications.

Hello guest
Thank you for your feedback. It is not in our interest to upset our customers.
We assure you that we will examine such a decision very carefully. One of Migros' tasks is to monitor market developments and identify new trends. From time to time, items that are selling less and less well are removed from the range.
Limited space also forces us to discontinue declining products. We are aware that by doing this we are giving up items that were popular with a smaller group of people. Sometimes we are also not happy when our favorite products disappear from the range.
If our customers show greater interest in the reintroduction of spelt wafers, we will certainly adapt to this need. We try - whenever possible - to respond to customer wishes.
We hope for your understanding and wish you a relaxing spring weekend.
Sunny greetings from the M-Infoline team

I also like to buy the spelt waffles. But unfortunately the packaging is very poor. I would ask that the same packaging be used for the spelt wafers.

Guest

Hello dear guest and hello many others ;)
Where can you get the spelt waffles you mentioned? I would love to try them, because I love spelt! Unfortunately there are no rye waffles :'(

HelloJustMust
Thank you for your interest.
Unfortunately, we had to discontinue our organic spelt waffles some time ago due to insufficient demand. We do not currently have a comparable replacement in our range.
We hope you find another waffle that you like and wish you a nice week. Your M-Infoline Team

I wish the rice cakes were thinner (like at Aldi) We buy from Aldi but we have the rice cakes delivered by our neighbor because they are so thin...

Hello
Thank you for your entry.
Our product range as well as our offers and services are constantly adapted to the latest requirements and trends.
Your feedback on the thickness of the wholegrain rice waffles is a helpful suggestion. The relevant departments have been informed of your request. However, we ask for your understanding if this cannot be taken into account immediately.
We look forward to your next visit to Migros and wish you a pleasant afternoon.
