The description says "To maintain optimum comfort and appearance, the cushions must therefore be shaken and "patted out" regularly.". Now my question is, how should I shake out the seat cushions if they cannot be removed?

Unfortunately, this is not correct. We bought the Darwin sofa about 2 years ago. We have repeatedly "beaten it out" but without too much success. After these two years, it is already so badly deformed that you are almost sitting on the wooden structure.
