The yield of the Swiss gherkin crop is far too low to cover all national demand; in fact, only 6% of the raw material processed comes from Switzerland. Furthermore, Switzerland does not grow the required size of gherkin. That's why our supplier buys the raw material for Condy gherkins from India. Dear Migros We recently bought a jar of cornichons and were astonished at the decidedly inedible taste (soft, rubbery, almost putrid, actually you can only taste vinegar), as we have always liked them very much. On closer inspection, we were astonished to discover that the cornichons were produced in India. I wonder if that is really necessary! Why are cornichons produced in India? And why do the same cornichons (extra-fine) sometimes come from Switzerland, sometimes from Turkey, sometimes from India or somewhere else? We try to buy products that come from the region or at least Europe and I have to say that it is extremely tedious when you have to turn each product over three times to find out where it was produced. Unfortunately, you have to do this every time you buy something, as you obviously can't rely on the fact that a product always comes from the same country. I also find it irritating that in many cases (not just in the case of cornichons) the indication of origin is only given in French. Hello DSV Thank you for your feedback on our gherkins. We are pleased that you prefer regional products. We assume that the gherkins have been pickled for a longer period of time. This can lead to minimal variations in consistency and taste. Nevertheless, the cucumbers can be consumed without hesitation. We always carry out checks on the supplier, regardless of which country the product comes from. The supplier must also have a number of certificates. This enables us to guarantee good quality. Unfortunately, small irregularities can never be completely ruled out with a natural product. In addition to the proximity of production, availability and quality must also be guaranteed. Swiss origin alone is no guarantee for products of impeccable quality. In addition, the yield of cornichons from Swiss agriculture is far too low to cover the entire domestic demand - only 6% of the processed raw material comes from Switzerland. In addition, the required size of gherkins is not grown in Switzerland. For this reason, our supplier sources the raw material for Condy cornichons from India. The decision to label most packaging in Migros with the French version of the term "élaboré en" was taken many years ago. One reason for this is that the space available on the packaging is very limited. If the term were to be printed in three languages, it would take up far too much space. On the other hand, French is a national language. However, our French-speaking fellow citizens are generally at a disadvantage and often have to make do with German expressions, especially on packaging.
