Why can't I find a single piece of broccoli, neither conventional nor organic, in my Migros supermarket (Horw) at 3 pm? What's wrong with the availability of basic foodstuffs? :-(

I found "tons" of broccoli in my local store at the same time yesterday, but ALL of it (organic and conventional) was mouldy. Presumably because they had all become damp and warm in their plastic packaging. I could have cried at the sight! Doubly unnecessary: nonsensical plastic packaging plus food waste en masse!

Hey Migrosmeitli, yes, unfortunately we know that too well here, it's really bad: either you can't find any broccoli at all or then it smells as soon as you open the plastic wrap to ... Dear Migros: Please improve availability and! Please really improve availability and quality, it can't be like this, otherwise we won't be shopping at Migros any more.

Hello Twilight

Thank you for your feedback on the broccoli. We regret that broccoli was not available during your recent purchase and apologize for this incident. We immediately forwarded your information to the store and instructed them to check availability. Should such a situation occur again, we recommend that you contact the local store management directly.

Despite this discrepancy, we look forward to welcoming you to Migros in the future.

Kind regards from the M-Infoline team

Do you have to store the broccoli in the fridge? Mine, bought on Saturday, can no longer be served to guests on Sunday. All the rosettes turned yellow and brown on Sunday. You can still eat it, but it no longer looks so fresh.

Hello Bonitalo, thank you for your question. Broccoli should be stored in the fridge, at best wrapped in a damp cloth or in foil to prevent it from wilting and becoming rubbery. However, it should be eaten after about 3 days at the latest, as it is not a storage vegetable. Best regards, your M-Infoline team

I don't think the broccoli in Migros is in the fridge either. And it should survive a day without refrigeration if it's fresh! Is my opinion wrong?

Edited

Hello Bonitalo, thank you for your feedback. We generally recommend storing broccoli in the fridge immediately after purchase. In the store, carrots or berries, for example, are also stored unrefrigerated. These should also be refrigerated immediately upon receipt. Unfortunately, it is not logistically possible to refrigerate all products from the fruit and vegetable range in the stores. Best regards, your M-Infoline team

Joaomerolillo didn't like my question. He says something about the plastic packaging. But I didn't mention that.

Hello, I noticed that often cauliflowers and broccoli are wrapped in plastic, also the bio ones. I understand this preserve a bit better the product but it has a huge impact on the waste. Could this be avoided?

Hello doremina92, many thanks for your message. We are pleased that you care about the environment and related issues. We are the same.

For this reason, a team of specialists works every day to reduce and optimise our packaging.

Before addressing the individual points in your message, we would like to point out a few things that should be borne in mind in our considerations:

In general, plastic packaging has a number of functions. It must

- Protect the product (extend shelf life and increase hygiene)
- Convey information (about the origin, contents, price, use-by date, etc. At Migros, this should be in three languages, if possible)
- Be easy to transport and stack (so that as few trucks as possible are needed for transportation)
- Be as environmentally friendly and recyclable as possible.

To determine the impact our packaging has on the environment, we conduct what are known as life cycle assessments, which take account of the effects of everything from the generation of the raw materials to the disposal of the packaging. These show that packaging accounts for only a very small proportion (2-5 %) of the total environmental impact over the course of a product's life cycle. The product itself has the greatest impact. In other words, a product that goes bad because of a lack of packaging has a far greater environmental impact than its packaging. Avoiding even the slightest food waste is our top priority.

This is why you'll also see cauliflower and broccoli in packaged form. Without protection, they quickly turn rubbery and lose their freshness, which leads to food waste.

With regard to our organic products, we sell them loose wherever possible. As a result, we already have 6000 metric tons of organic fruit and vegetables on sale without packaging. Here too, we are constantly considering new alternatives.

However, in accordance with the new organic food ordinance, organic food must always be clearly identifiable as such and distinguishable from conventionally produced products. That is why you can still often find plastic sleeves.

Unfortunately, the guidelines aren't met by simply labelling shelves. The organic food ordinance stipulates that providers are responsible for ensuring that customers know whether every single product is organically produced or a regular item. Open sales make it harder to meet this requirement.

Other zero-waste initiatives are in the pipeline. However, before implementing such measures, we must always consider the relevant situation. That's why we must ask you to be patient.

Last, but not least, it must be remembered that Migros also has an interest in reducing unnecessary packaging. After all, packaging is a cost factor.

We hope that this helps clarify our efforts to reduce the use of plastic, Kind regards, your M-Infoline Team

Why is broccoli, whether organic or normal, usually shrink-wrapped? Is "food waste" really the key issue here, as you have explained in various questions? I ask myself the same question about cauliflower.

Hello Ronny1988, thank you very much for your input. It is indeed the case that broccoli and cauliflower become rubbery very quickly and are therefore simply no longer bought by customers. You can counteract this with a thin plastic film. This way, broccoli and cauliflower can be kept for much longer. Best regards, your M-Infoline team

This answer is the opposite of my question and their answer about a month ago. My concern a month ago: mine (broccoli) bought on Saturday can no longer be served to guests on Sunday. All the rosettes turned yellow and brown on Sunday. You can still eat it, but it no longer looks so fresh. Your answer at the time: We always recommend storing broccoli in the fridge as soon as you buy it. Now you write at Ronny 1988: it will keep much longer in foil. I don't quite understand.....It should stay fresh for a day in foil without a fridge. But maybe mine wasn't that fresh when I bought it.

Hello Bonitalo, thank you for your feedback. It may be that the broccoli you bought was no longer completely fresh. We try to guarantee perfect quality by imposing clear requirements on our suppliers and by carrying out strict checks on incoming goods. Certain deviations sometimes only become apparent after some time and are not immediately visible. Our aim is to prevent this, which is why we are constantly working on this and trying to remove the affected items from the shelves. However, we already told you back then that it is best to store broccoli in foil. That way it loses less moisture. Best regards, Angela your M-Infoline team

When washing, small black dots appear deep in the water, what are they? Very small, like black sand... unfortunately I can't attach a photo. I hereby also suggest to implement this function.

When I buy broccoli in my local store, it is packaged in plastic. I then have to weigh it and that's how I get the label. So I also pay for the plastic. I weighed the plastic today and it weighed 8 grams. I don't think it's okay that I as a customer have to pay for the plastic or the extra weight. Because you can just as well offer the broccoli without plastic. What does Migros intend to do so that the plastic weight doesn't have to be paid for?

The film protects the product. Especially in the warmer months, the broccoli keeps much better thanks to the moisture in the foil and doesn't get rubbery so quickly. If we did without the foil, the spoilage of the broccoli would be much higher - thanks to the foil, we can prevent food waste. your M-Infoline team

It weighs 10 grams! VAT is a cheek that I have to pay! Moreover, the foil does not protect, the vegetables rot in it!

I saw a broccoli at Migros Schaffhauserplatz today, "from the region for the region" The season doesn't actually start until May, so I wanted to ask if there was a mistake or if there really are already Swiss broccolis? :P

Hello guest Thank you for your message. Our broccoli is indeed currently from Spain or Italy. Unfortunately, a mistake was made in the labeling at the point of sale. We have informed the branch immediately so that the error can be rectified. We look forward to your next visit and wish you good health. your M-Infoline Team

On what factors is the price calculation based? I have the impression that there are very large fluctuations. Seems to be more of a fall/winter vegetable if I'm not mistaken :-) Thanks for the info

Hello Tuseno, thank you very much for your post. Can we ask you to tell us your purchasing region? Best regards, your M-Infoline team

Migros Neuwiesen, Winterthur

Yes, you're right. The price fluctuations are much smaller in the fall and winter. In principle, the supply/demand ratio determines the price. At the moment, the supply of broccoli from production is unfortunately very poor. Prices are correspondingly high. We hope for your understanding, wish you a pleasant weekend and look forward to your next visit to one of our Migros stores. your M-Infoline Team

Hello M-Infoline, Bimi is not yet in the range as announced below. What is the status?

Hello carlos1977 Thank you for contacting us. Unfortunately, there is an interruption in the supply of Broccolini Bimi. The vegetables should be available in about 2 weeks. Thank you for your patience. We look forward to welcoming you to our stores in the future and wish you a wonderful summer. your M-Infoline team

Hello carlos1977, thank you for your post. Would you like to give us more detailed information so that we can get to the bottom of your request? Best regards, your M-Infoline team

Hello, of course. Compare your reply to me 3 months ago. But I have never found Bimi in the range. Greetings

Hello carlos1977, the Migros Cooperative Eastern Switzerland has decided not to grow Bimi separately based on the experience of other suppliers and producers. Perhaps there will be an opportunity to carry out a sales test with imported Bimi, but we can't make any promises at the moment. We hope for your understanding and that you will find an alternative in our wide range. Kind regards from the M-Infoline team

I was able to buy Bimi 2 weeks ago in Migros Marktgasse Bern. But only to be seen for a short time. No sign of it since then :(

Hello Carlos1977 The season is over. The Broccolini Bimi are expected to be available again from June 2021. Kind regards from your M-Infoline team

When will the Bimi also be offered? Considered a superfood everywhere. It looks similar to brócoli.

Hello carlos1977, thank you for your inquiry. Bimi is a mini version of broccoli and is often used in Asian cuisine. Some Migros cooperatives offered it some time ago. In which region do you normally shop? We would be happy to ask your Migros cooperative whether they plan to offer it again. Best regards, your M-Infoline team

Hello M-Infoline. Regarding the question, in which cooperative do I buy, mostly Bern or Köniz

Hello carlos1977 Thank you for contacting us again. We have checked with the fruit and vegetable department. The Broccolini Bimi, 200g in a bag, will be available in the range around the beginning of June. The vegetables come from the Migros Aare Cooperative region. We look forward to welcoming you to our stores in the future and wish you a wonderful springtime. your M-Infoline team
