Yesterday my hat went up - at the organic (not here on Migipedia) Williams pears. They are imported from ARGENTINA. And Migros dares to sell them as organic? I think it's a shame enough that most organic fruit and vegetables are carted in from Italy and Spain. But overseas for local fruit is definitely no longer organic!
I can only agree with that. It often goes unnoticed that people are switching from Swiss fruit to imported goods. I find that very offensive.
Hello everyone
Thank you very much for your feedback.
We can well understand your concerns about organic pears from Argentina. Ecology and sustainability are also very important issues for us.
However, organic products are not only grown in Switzerland and Europe, but all over the world. Some countries overseas even have a much longer tradition of organic farming than Europe. Compared to small, heavily populated Switzerland, they have much larger areas of arable land and often even better conditions for organic farming than we do.
We can understand that for some consumers it is not just the farming method that is important, but also ethical and environmental aspects. You are reluctant to import organic food from far away - which is very understandable. However, it should be noted that Migros' organic products are never flown in, as air transportation is strictly prohibited. We mainly import by ship and train.
Ideally, we would like to source all our products from Switzerland. However, we have to bear in mind that we are a small country with increasingly limited agricultural land. If we only stocked Swiss organic products, our range would be much smaller.
Both Switzerland and other European countries therefore import organic products from other parts of the world. The products must be produced in the country of origin in accordance with EU organic standards. Compliance with these conditions is checked in the producing countries by local inspection bodies, which must be accredited by the respective state. Imported products are certified in Switzerland by the independent inspection bodies bio.inspecta in Frick, IMO in Weinfelden or Procert Safety in Bern, which also inspect and certify other organic labels such as Bud or Demeter.
So that you always know exactly where the organic products come from and can decide whether you want to buy pears from Argentina or Switzerland, the origin of our products is always marked on the shelves and racks or on the packaging.
If a product is in season in Switzerland and the local cultivation provides sufficient produce, we always source our products from Switzerland. CH organic pears are expected to be available from calendar week 28/29.
Migros is therefore also an important partner of Swiss agriculture and always endeavors to ensure that the entire domestic production can be marketed.
We hope this answer will help you and ask you to be patient until the organic pears from Switzerland are available. Do you have any further questions or concerns? Contact us - we are happy to help!
