We have been buying oat bran for years and have always been satisfied with the product. Now we bought another 6 portions about 10 days ago (batch number: "L 17.08.14 / Germany"), and the product seems to me to have changed both haptically (more finely ground) and organoleptically (smells slightly of old flour?). Is this a production slip-up, have the production parameters been changed, or is the product contaminated in some way? I don't think the product is spoiled.

We are sorry that you are no longer satisfied with our organic oat bran. When we checked the retained samples of the requested batch, we were able to confirm the slightly finer structure, but this is within the tolerated range. However, the smell and taste do not deviate. The organic oat bran is not contaminated.
Organic oat bran is made from 100% organic oats. During production, the organic oats are cleaned, hulled, kilned, flaked and then further processed into oat bran. These production processes have been the same for decades and have not changed. What is constantly changing is the quality of the organic oats. In this case, the organic oat bran was slightly finer, as the raw oats consisted of crumbly grains.

What grinding/sieving index does the bran have? Perhaps M2 - B6?

In contrast to wheat bran, oat bran is not produced during the classic grinding of bakery grains such as wheat, but is usually produced from oat flakes in a special enrichment process.
The designation M2 - B6 probably refers to the milling stages in the production of bread flour from wheat products. We are not familiar with such designations of grinding/sifting degree indices in oat milling.

Our oat bran is made from 100% oats. However, raw oats can be "contaminated" with other cereals during growth in the field or afterwards during harvesting or transportation. In our experience, however, you can assume that oat products (oat flakes, oat flakes and oat bran) usually consist of over 99% oats.

Our organic oat bran is without germ, as the bran consists of the outer layers of the oat kernel and is separated from the flour, the germ is no longer contained in the bran.
