Is organic milk always guaranteed to be free from antibiotics? One competitor explicitly states this in RED on the packaging.
Hello Sissy8625, thank you for your question. We are happy to confirm that there are no antibiotic residues in this organic milk. Only milk without antibiotics and/or other inhibitors may be processed. For this reason, the raw milk is tested at the milk reception by means of an inhibitor detection test. Why, as far as I know, is there no milk for sale in Migros that has five full animal welfare stars? Is it because the calves are always separated from the cow? I recently saw a documentary about a milk producer who produces milk but leaves the calf with the cow for as long as it wants. He is of the opinion that there would be enough milk for both the calf and the cow. Production is just expensive and more complex. However, I would be very pleased to find such milk in the Migros range.
Good morning stefanja The top score would only be achieved here if the cows could be out on pasture all year round, which is not possible in Switzerland. Source: How sustainable is organic milk? Best regardsFrederica
Hello stefanja, thank you for your post. In fact, all drinking milk that you can buy from us has 4 stars in the M-Check Animal Welfare. Be it IP-SUISSE, Bio Suisse or Demeter milk. The documentation you described refers to mother-bonded calf rearing or mother-calf husbandry. This is a form of rearing in milk production in which the newborn calves are not separated from their mother. The calves remain with their mothers until weaning (12 weeks or longer), where they take milk directly from the udder and the cow can raise her calf according to her nature. In contrast to suckler cow husbandry in meat production, the cows are still milked and the milk is sold or processed. The sale of milk from suckler calf rearing has only been permitted since July 2020. Prior to this, the Swiss Milk Hygiene Ordinance did not allow this. There are only a few dairy farms in Switzerland that allow calves to suckle from their mothers. Accordingly, we do not currently offer such milk - nor do we have an M-Check animal welfare assessment by the HAFL (Swiss College of Agricultural, Forest and Food Sciences). This milk is now available in this tetra packaging instead of a plastic bottle. There are more and more products with Tetra packaging. Migros does not (yet) take back the empty packs. However, there are some recycling collection points that have been doing this for years (even free of charge). You just have to make a special trip there. When can we expect Migros to start doing this, keyword M-Generation?
Hello pwilms, thank you for the message. Migros attaches great importance to the ecologically sound and high-quality recycling of packaging. Where it makes ecological sense and is economically viable, the raw materials should be recycled and returned to the material cycles. However, Migros cannot currently offer to take back drinks cartons or Tetra packs for various reasons: Recycling drinks cartons has little additional environmental benefit and leads to very high additional costs. Beverage cartons are also often not resealable, which can lead to hygiene problems and unpleasant odors in the stores and distribution centers. For these reasons, there are currently no plans to collect drinks cartons in Migros stores. However, Migros does not categorically reject the collection of drinks cartons. If the infrastructural, technical and financial hurdles can be overcome, the ecological balance improves and there is also a great customer need, Migros will reconsider the introduction of a voluntary collection of beverage cartons. From one day to the next, the recyclable Bio Past milk has become a Tetrapak. Is that supposed to be sustainable if you have to throw it in the bin afterwards instead of recycling it? I also pay a higher price and love this organic milk, but the packaging is a reason to switch to something else. To the chagrin of organic farmers. I don't think that's right. Please use the previous packaging again, then I'll be happy to buy organic milk again. Is it possible to get away from the Tetrapak again?
Hello Princess15, thank you for your feedback on the milk packaging, which we have switched to "Tetra Edge" (Tetra Pak). The environmental impact of the beverage carton and the PE bottle (plastic bottle) are comparable, there is no significant difference. This is despite the fact that recycling options are not (yet) widespread. A public study is available on this: https://www.bafu.admin.ch/bafu/de/home/themen/abfall/mitteilungen.msg-id-54391.html. In addition, thanks to the new opening system, we have greatly improved the level of convenience and the packaging is now easier to handle. We will be happy to take your feedback on board and keep an eye on it. Best regards, your M-Infoline team
Grüeziwohl, it is good that you are taking the trouble to write a reply here. I also took the trouble to read the study and found the following sentence: The study also compared recycling and thermal utilization of beverage packaging from an ecological point of view. The results show that for the large quantities of separately collected beverage packaging, recycling is ecologically more advantageous than incineration in a waste incineration plant. So you must have had large quantities at the milk recycling plant. Is that because you still have to sort the plastic bottles or why? It would also be easier if you were to make various throw-ins for shampoo. Milk, coffee cream etc. Then you would have less time to sort. I continue to drink the Heidi milk and hope that you will convert the organic milk again. Because the Heidi milk from the mountains is not so ecological either.....(Weg).....but the packaging convinces me more. I would be grateful for an answer.
Hello Princess15, thank you for your feedback. The bottles of shampoo, shower gels, milk products etc. can still be returned in the separate drop-off hole at the recycling wall/return point. It was therefore not due to the sorting, but rather to the long-term planning that the eco-balance is massively improved when the Tetra packaging is collected. We hope this information helps you. Best regards, your M-Infoline team
The statements from the M-Infoline regarding sustainability are not convincing and do not really address Princess15's questions and comments. I also very much regret the switch to Tetra packaging and have noticed after a short time that our bin bags are filling up much more quickly than before. Incidentally, I recently saw in eastern Switzerland that recyclable bottles are still in use there. So, it does work...

Why was the packaging changed to Tetrapack? Unfortunately, I have not yet found a recycling point for Tetrapack near me.

The cow on the packaging has horns. Can I assume that this milk comes from cows with horns?
Hello SirTho Migros does not differentiate between cows with or without horns. Source: Answers from M-Infoline to guest. Scroll down to the end of 2013. best regardsFrederica
This means that nothing has changed in the 8 years.... Is it therefore correct that only Demeter milk comes from cows with horns?
Hello SirTho, thank you for your question. We would like to add the following to Frederica's answer: Because farmers often keep both cows with horns and those without horns at the same time, the separate keeping and/or collection alone would be very costly. To minimize the risk of injury, the Swiss Council for Accident Prevention and the Farmers' Association recommend hornless cattle. The Bio Suisse Budding Guidelines, which also apply to Migros' organic producers, prohibit the dehorning of cows in principle. For safety reasons, however, Bio Suisse authorizes dehorning under certain conditions. It is correct that Demeter only offers milk products from cows with horns. Best regards, your M-Infoline team
Thank you very much for the detailed answer, much appreciated. I have been looking into the subject for some time now and I am of the opinion that dehorning is not animal-friendly (among other problems, of course) and I no longer support it. So it's good that Migros has Demeter milk on offer.

Can I find out which farm my liter of milk comes from?
It is actually logical that this is not possible. When the farmer brings, say, 300 liters of milk to the dairy, this milk is added to the milk of the other farmers during bottling. There isn't a new batch for each farmer every time.
Hello Luckyverena, thank you for your question. Magnoliapower is right: the producers take the milk to the dairy for processing. There it is emptied together. For this reason, the exact origin (farm) cannot be determined. Best regards, your M-Infoline team

Sometimes the milk is almost impossible to froth. I know that the age of the milk plays a role, but what other reasons are there why there is no firm foam?
Hello Luckyverena, thank you for your inquiry. We would be happy to inform you about other possible reasons that influence foaming. These include Heat treatment, storage, fat and protein content. Raw milk is also more difficult to froth than fresh pasteurized milk and UHT milk. A reduced fat content can increase the foam volume. We hope this information helps you. Why is the organic milk so difficult to open? The screw cap is very difficult to open. I sometimes only manage to open this cap after 2-3 attempts with difficulty.
Hello Felix2952, thank you for your question. We are sorry that the lid is very difficult to open. After consulting with our product managers, we are already aware of this issue. We are therefore currently working on optimizing the lids. However, as the project has not yet been completed, it may be a while before we finally introduce the lids. We will be happy to take your feedback on board so that we can possibly make adjustments for the next production run. Best regards, your M-Infoline team

Why is organic milk sold at a higher price than non-organic milk, given that organic protects the environment? If Migros is in favor of protecting the environment, then it should sell organic products at a lower price than those that destroy it. No ?
Hello Kotty, thank you for your question. Organic products are considerably more expensive to produce than conventional products. With best regards, your M-Infoline team
