Hello, we recently bought some fresh basil. The packaging says Israel by air. How do I understand this? Are the herbs packed in Israel and sent to Switzerland? Or are only the plants grown in Israel and then sent as whole plants? I would be interested to know the logistics behind this. Thank you for the explanation

Dear Migros, as mentioned below, "my" branch is Wängihof 8004 Zurich. I have not received any further reply. Even now - and all winter - there is still only basil from Israel. For consumers who are critical of the policies of the current Israeli government, it would be very accommodating if basil from another country was also offered alongside Israeli basil and they had a choice. I am sure that the capable Migros buyers on this planet can still find an alternative source.
Hello Jan_Zueri, thank you for your post. We regret that you are only now reading about us. In fact, we can only offer basil from Israel until around the beginning of June. The production of basil is very delicate. If it only rains heavily two or three times, the farmers have to resort to sprays to prevent mildew and other diseases. In Israel, production conditions are best until the summer. After that, we offer basil from Switzerland and partly from Spain and Italy. There are probably already alternatives somewhere in the world, but these destinations are all further away than Israel. Best regards, your M-Infoline team

Thank you for your answer.
Then the Migros doctrine is probably "ecological footprint optimized" over "political harmlessness". The decision was different for Granny Smith from South Africa, which was still under apartheid at the time....
I'm also going to find out whether basil really couldn't be imported from countries like Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia or Morocco over the winter.

Hello M-Infoline Team, My branch is Wängihof 8004 Zurich
Hello guest, it is not possible to produce herbs in Switzerland during the winter months. To ensure that we can offer an attractive range of herbs all year round, our supplier works with producers from Israel, Italy and Tenerife. The range depends on the quantity of products available. Wherever possible, different destinations are taken into account. With precise declarations, we ensure that customers can make a free choice when buying. Have a nice day and best regards, your M-Infoline team

Hello Migros, my branch only sells basil from Israel. You can be critical of the current Israeli government's policy and therefore avoid products from Israel. Unfortunately, there is no choice at Migros. Would it be possible for basil from other origins to be offered - so that each consumer can choose which one he/she wants to buy?
Hello Jan_Zueri, thank you very much for your contribution. Can you tell us which is "your" branch? We would have to forward your request to the relevant cooperative, as culinary herbs are purchased regionally. Best regards, your M-Infoline team

is it not possible to make a different packaging so that the basil lasts a little longer. e.g. longish from a softer hard plastic like from the self-service charguterie. where they pack dried meat, bacon and so on?
Hello guest
We will be happy to review your input, but we cannot promise that your request will be implemented.
Best regards from the M-Infoline team
