Why do gala apples always have such a grayish taste?

Hello minerva56, thank you very much for your message. We regret that the apples have an unpleasant taste. We would like to investigate this. It is difficult to make a general statement about this. We would therefore ask you to write to us via the contact form and send us a photo of the product label: https://help.migros.ch/de/produkt.html Kind regards, your M-Infoline team

I always buy Gala apples, why do I only get almost frozen ones at Migros Belp when they are defrosted at home, they usually turn moldy or start to rot from the inside out, this never happens to me at Migros Chly Wabern.

The apples are stored in the cooler, so they may still be cool to the touch when you buy them. Our apples are not stored in the freezer.

So that we can compensate you for the missed enjoyment, we ask you to return the apples to Migros Belp. your M-Infoline team

Currently bought the Lillibigs apples from Brazil. I think they have a penetrating smell of pesticides. Migros, please check the quality, residues? Otherwise - especially when the Swiss apples are available - I love the Gala apples.

Hello lichtwesen, thank you very much for your post. This taste is probably due to the container transportation on the ship. This can happen if the goods are not ventilated enough and the humidity is too high. We will inform the suppliers about this. We are currently importing goods because various varieties and calibers are no longer available in Switzerland due to last year's frost damage. Best regards, your M-Infoline team

Hello M-Infoline Team Thank you very much for your answer. Don't you think that supply tends to determine demand in such cases? Gala apples are my absolute favorite, but I'm still very happy to do without them for a while and use other apple varieties from Switzerland in order to support Swiss farmers and not import them from New Zealand. I can imagine that many customers share this view. As I would never have assumed that some of the apples in Migros come from New Zealand, I almost bought these Gala apples by mistake yesterday. Many people probably buy these apples and don't even realize that they come from New Zealand. I would be interested to know if there was a survey on this topic, as you assume that many customers don't want to do without one variety?

Hello __celine__, thank you for your feedback. The first Swiss apples come onto the market around mid-August. Apples from France, Spain and Italy a little earlier. In spring, there are only a few apple varieties left in our warehouses. Imports are therefore released by the federal government for a certain period of time. Depending on availability, we import apples from South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and Chile to expand our range. The countries of the southern hemisphere have harvest time in spring and bring fresh produce to the world market. The import of apples amounts to no more than 8% per year - so the Swiss market is hardly affected. We also take our responsibility towards the environment seriously. For example, wherever possible we ensure that our goods are transported by ship. However, it is also our obligation to offer the widest possible range of customers good products at reasonable prices. No, we have not conducted a survey on this topic. The important thing is that the origin of Migros products is clearly stated so that every customer has the freedom to decide whether or not to buy them. Kind regards, your M-Infoline team

@M-Infoline: I am confused by the following statement from M-Infoline: "We also take our responsibility towards the environment seriously. For example, wherever possible we ensure that our goods are transported by ship." Can you please explain what shipping has to do with environmental protection? Probably nothing at all. Hello Offline, thank you very much for your inquiry.

Migros has the principle of always sourcing a product from the geographically closest destination. Of course, availability and the high quality and product safety we demand must be guaranteed. It is not without reason that Migros is an important partner of Swiss agriculture and also endeavors to ensure that the entire domestic production can be marketed.

Whenever possible, we naturally source Swiss apples and pears. These are harvested and stored in late summer/autumn. As soon as the goods in the cold stores have been used up, we sometimes switch to foreign goods. In the case of foreign produce, we take particular care to ensure that it does not have to be flown into Switzerland.

We hope this information is helpful for you. Best regards, your M-Infoline team

Why are Gala apples from New Zealand being offered at the moment? I can imagine that Switzerland does not produce enough apples of this variety, but why is this variety not temporarily removed from the range? There are still plenty of other apple varieties from Switzerland.

Hello __celine__, thank you for your post. The apples are only harvested in summer/autumn. As the goods from the warehouses are coming to an end, apples are imported due to demand. Our customers are reluctant to give up one variety, which is why we are continuing to stock it. Best regards, your M-Infoline team

In and of itself a very good apple. Recently, however, the quality has been very poor! Great color on the outside, but rotten, moldy or otherwise mealy on the inside. Today I had the second apple this week that was completely inedible!!! Quality control does not seem to exist.

Then the apple seems to have been delivered by Le Shop....
Otherwise your own quality control has failed, as in Migros the goods are generally placed in the basket or weighing scales themselves.

I've had the same problems for months. At the moment I only buy Golden apples or at the Coop, but I don't particularly enjoy chewing on Golden apples all the time (they don't taste great) and shopping at the Coop. What's wrong with the apples? As Gast described above, super nice on the outside, brown on the inside.

A week ago, M-Infoline wrote on the same subject for Braeburn apples:
"We do our best to always offer only flawless quality. Unfortunately, the shelf life of the apples is not so good this season. Depending on the variety, they no longer keep for long and become mealy after a few days.
The new harvest will not be available until the middle/end of August. Therefore, from mid-June, when the Swiss season comes to an end, we will be importing mostly new-harvest produce from the southern hemisphere until the best quality Swiss apples are available again.
In general, you can return products that you are not satisfied with to the relevant store. You will receive a replacement there if necessary."

Explains a lot. Well, let's wait for the fine Swiss apples. It's really weird that you even have to import apples...

Hello guest
