We have noticed for some time now when shopping that the Respeggt eggs are no longer available.
Have they been removed from the range? Even though they stand for a really great thing? I think that would be an extreme shame...

Hey missy_89, thanks for your question. We originally introduced the Respeggt eggs to test different technical approaches to prevent the killing of male chicks. In the summer of 2024, the industry association, Gallo Suisse, decided that from the end of 2024 all incubated eggs will be tested for the sex of the chick to avoid the killing of male chicks. From January 2025, all flocks will be born without the killing of chicks, making Respeggt eggs indistinguishable from conventional Swiss or CoR eggs. Kind regards, Chloe

Thank you very much for the quick explanation. I knew that something would change / will change by 2025 / 2026 but not that it will be implemented yet.
I very much hope that you can also rely on this. With the Respeggt eggs, you had a box that was visually different from the others and that gave you a certain amount of confidence. Now you just have to hope that all companies that specialize in poultry/eggs actually and dutifully implement these requirements. Personally, that makes me a little uneasy... 😖
Bio Suisse plans to be chick-free from 2026. By then, it is assumed that 80-90% of this will already have been implemented.
Can Migros assure me that it only has eggs in its range that are free from chick culling? Verifiably?
(Excluding barn eggs from imports, but I don't buy them anyway)

I can assure you that no more chicks are killed in Switzerland. There are 2 large hatcheries for laying hens and chickens for fattening, 1 of which is in our country, newly built and ultra-modern. Each egg is identified by an MRI and AI, highly technical. If you are interested, you can read all about it at www.animalco.ch. In the case of organic eggs, the broiler is also reared and then sold as such. Lidl already has this in its range. Unfortunately, as with many farm animals, the female sex is worth more than the male, and you should be aware of that!

Hoi missy_89, thank you for your feedback. The conversion period takes approx. 1 - 1.5 years due to the length of time the laying hens are used. However, no more chicks are killed for the new laying hens. Until this time has elapsed, eggs without chick killing can still be on sale. Kind regards, Chloe

Can Migros give me a definite date from when chick killing will certainly no longer take place for the eggs they sell? Resp. when will these 1-1.5 years be over? Otherwise, I would like to continue to have a clear delimitation of the products in which chick killing still takes place until the changeover.
I definitely don't want to support something like this (any more)... I have probably done it long enough when I was not yet aware of it... :(

Hey missy_89, thank you very much for your feedback. I understand that you don't want to support this approach. The flocks born from 2025 onwards are all without chick killing. In other words, all incubated eggs from 2025 onwards will be tested for sex and there will be no more killing. However, there are still laying hens that were born before 2025 and continue to hatch (for these 1-1.5 years). We can therefore only guarantee that they will not be killed until 2026. Unfortunately, the eggs cannot be differentiated. Does that help you? Best regards, Chloe
