What's the problem with today's carrots?

Was ist das Problem mit den heutigen Rüebli?

I buy carrots very often. At Migros and Coop. But compared to the past, they can hardly be kept for more than two to three days. After that, they quickly turn pale and start to turn black. What's the problem? We even have a high-tech fridge with an extra cold vegetable compartment. But no matter how and where you store them in the fridge, the problem is always the same.

Is it the harvest (but it's like this all year round) or are they stored incorrectly at the wholesaler?

I usually only buy them individually now, but several times a week...

Hello everyone

Thank you very much for your feedback. We are very sorry that you had a negative experience with our carrots and I have clarified your concerns with our freshness specialists. There is currently no known problem with the quality of the carrots, and nothing has been changed in the storage or packing process in recent years. However, the quality of our products is very important to us and we would like to look into this matter. Please let us know (if possible in this case or if you make such an observation again) the lot or batch number (usually located next to the best-before date. With the help of these numbers, we can check when exactly the affected product was manufactured and whether errors occurred during production at that time and thus discover the causes of a product defect in order to avoid it in the future.

Many thanks and best regards, Tabi

"Carrots are characterized by their long shelf life, they can be kept in the refrigerator for 3-4 weeks. However, this assumes that the carrots are cooled quickly after harvesting and stored in a cool place from harvest to consumption. In reality, this is rarely the case. This leads to a contradiction between the above statement and what actually happens to them in your own fridge. This is why the actual shelf life is usually somewhat shorter. However, carrots will almost always keep for 7-10 days in the fridge without any problems if you follow the household storage tips listed here.

To avoid disappointment in terms of shelf life, freshly bought carrots should not necessarily go straight from the shopping basket into the fridge. In the case of bunched carrots, the leaves should be removed at home at the latest. If you want to be on the safe side, you should take carrots bought without leaves out of the bag or open the foil on the peel. Although the foil packaging does help to preserve the carrots if they are exposed to the cold for a long time, in reality the carrots are usually exposed to higher temperatures in the store and on the way home. The carrots start to sweat and a damp microclimate develops in the bag or under the film, which can promote rotting. If you want to be particularly gentle with the carrots, you can wrap them in a damp cloth, otherwise the vegetable compartment or the organic fresh compartment in the fridge is the ideal place to store them."

The problem therefore seems to be primarily the unrefrigerated storage in the stores, and until they are there, and that they are then stored at home, possibly directly with the plastic packaging. However, the main problem is certainly the hours of lying around in the stores. Are the carrots actually kept refrigerated in Migros stores and if so, are those that are not sold also refrigerated until the next day or do they stay warm on the shelf? How many days are such carrots offered for sale before they are disposed of?

Many thanks for the entry. Of course I've already gone through all the storage tips, but the carrots never last more than 4 - 5 days at most in the Bio-Fresh compartment... And it's not just a Migros problem. My guess is still the storage conditions during transportation and then in the store...By the way, we had carrot salad at Christmas. To be on the safe side, we bought an organic pack as well as the normal ones. And indeed, the normal ones had neither flavor nor were they tasty, the organic pack was very good...It's a shame that such products are allowed to be sold...

It could also be because the carrots are often stored for months before they go on sale: http://www.agrarforschungschweiz.ch/artikel/2006_10_1212.pdf
