Hello, in the current advertisement for "From the region", a salad is bought without plastic wrapping. This is not the case in the Migros stores I know. So where is this already the case and when throughout Switzerland? Or does the advertising not correspond to reality? Thanks for the information
Hello bluekoala, thank you for your post. The Basel and Valais cooperatives are testing open sales for various types of lettuce. Basically, the thin film around the lettuce protects the product from premature spoilage and is an important factor against food waste. From a purely ecological point of view, it does not usually make sense to do without packaging altogether, as it provides the best possible protection for the products during transportation and against spoilage. It is therefore not, as is often assumed, pointless "waste", but performs important functions. We draw up life cycle assessments so that we know what impact our packaging has on the environment. These take into account the effects from the extraction of raw materials to the disposal of the packaging. They show that packaging only contributes very little (around 2 to 5 %) to the environmental impact over the product life cycle - the product itself has the greatest impact. A product spoiled due to a lack of packaging therefore has a much greater impact on the environment than its packaging. It should be noted that Migros avoids unnecessary packaging in its own interest, as this is always a cost factor. I look forward to your next visit. best regards, Angela

Hello Angela, I haven't bought any lettuce recently (isn't that what you're talking about?), but unfortunately it was packed so wet that not only all the other purchases were soaked, but the lettuce itself had to be turned upside down and drained in a sieve at home immediately if it wasn't to be rotten the next day. Is washing even necessary? In the past, it was completely normal to find an uninvited guest in a salad every now and then. Salads were at most dried out, but never rotten.

Hello Cinderella1925 Thank you for your report. As the lettuce can be heavily soiled with soil, depending on the weather conditions, it is washed beforehand. These lettuces, which were extremely wet, were probably left in the spin-drying machine for too little time. There should be no water left in the pack. Kind regards, Angela
Hi bluekoala I am generally disappointed by how many vegetables are sold in plastic. I have completely given up vegetables in plastic. If they are wrapped, I don't buy them. Of course I don't use plastic bags for open vegetables either! It's hard sometimes, but honestly, if everyone doesn't start doing it themselves, nothing will happen until a really hefty plastic tax is introduced. I think Migros' statement is a bit lax. There are alternatives to plastic - compostable alternatives. The margins on food are certainly still high enough to cover the small surcharge. If you're going to use packaging, then at least be consistent and not just "good" enough to justify the next "green meadow-nature-loving" PR stunt. If you don't actively contribute - you actively destroy - unfortunately there is no in-between.

My lettuce was already in the LeShop shopping cart earlier, but I just noticed a fresh review (from 3 hours ago) in the left-hand column on the "Now on Migipedia" page at https://migipedia.migros.ch/en/270701313200 : "Unfortunately too wet", and 21 days ago : "Good, but sold too wet", and 4 months ago : "Outside fixed and inside nothing. Everything inside is black because the packaging was totally damp or wet. Too bad". And that from a total of 7 reviews. I'm afraid the spin-dryer is chronically in hibernation.
