Stable obligation due to bird flu: the clock is ticking for free-range eggs

Stallpflicht wegen Vogelgrippe: Uhr tickt für Freiland-Eier

Because bird flu is rampant, laying hens have not been allowed out of the barn for some time.

The clock is ticking for producers of free-range eggs, because after twelve weeks of compulsory confinement they have to re-declare their products.

The umbrella organization of the poultry industry is calling for more flexibility.

Since Wednesday, November 16, 2016, the inspection area has extended to the whole of Switzerland.

In fact, there have been no real free-range eggs for some time now.

The time has come in Bavaria: from Monday there will be no more free-range eggs

The 12-week rule also applies in Switzerland. Could Migros provide information on the situation in this regard?

Hey @kuno56pi

Thanks for your inquiry. I did some research and can tell you the following:

What are the measures in Switzerland to prevent transmission to poultry or to food such as eggs and poultry?

Due to the findings of infected wild birds in the Swiss Plateau and on Lake Geneva, the following adaptation of the "Ordinance on precautionary measures to prevent the introduction of avian influenza" was decided, among other things. To protect the animals and prevent the spread of the virus, domestic poultry must be fed and watered from Wednesday 16.11.16 in such a way that the feeding and watering places are not accessible to wild birds. The aim of these measures is to prevent contact between wild birds and domestic poultry throughout Switzerland. This means that free-range chickens may no longer be allowed out to pasture. However, daily access to the roofed winter garden (outdoor climate area) in front of the coop is permitted and desired. This regulation is initially valid until 31.01.17 and has now been extended until 31.03.2017.

Why do I still get free-range Swiss eggs at Migros even though the hens are no longer allowed to roam outside?

It is not possible to correct the packaging and the free-range claim so quickly. The declaration on the packaging, e.g. 6 free-range organic eggs, therefore does not need to be amended in accordance with the ordinance and is permitted despite the fact that the hens are not allowed out to pasture.

Does Migros sell poultry or eggs from banned farms?

Migros does not stock eggs or poultry from farms that have already been banned.

Kind regards

Ivan
