I was astonished to see that in February green asparagus from Peru !!! is offered in Saas Fee Migros. I always thought that asparagus should be consumed seasonally and as fresh as possible (regional production). What is Migros thinking? How can this be ecologically justified? It's really nonsense to offer such a thing.

Hmhm Migros Aare fully normal has also been available from Germany for years... ↵Peru is always included. (Early harvest is the logo) And it is requested and bought 😉😶

In Switzerland, the area under asparagus cultivation is relatively small and agriculture is nowhere near able to cover the quantities required. Migros therefore has to switch to other countries. Some of this also comes from overseas. This is first done by cargo ship to Europe and then by truck to Switzerland. However, this method of transportation is only possible for products with a certain shelf life. Innovations are constantly being made here. For example, thanks to packaging developments, asparagus from Peru can be transported by sea, which reduces the environmental impact enormously. And as soon as goods from Europe and Switzerland are available, we will of course offer them. Kind regards, Marc

It's true that green asparagus is still transported by air today. Wherever possible, however, this is avoided. Especially with white asparagus from Peru, the kliema balance is not so bad. This is because European asparagus is now heated under foil so that it can be harvested earlier. Peruvian asparagus also tastes excellent.

dear marc that is an explanation and yet not an explanation. migros invests a lot of money in the mcheck story and generations m. then i believe in the short term that migros has a real interest in planet earth. but then things like the asparagus story come up again and i don't buy migros' fuss. the consistent thing would be: nothing that is grown in europe may ever be imported. if there are no asparagus here, there are none. period.
