Of course, voters should ultimately vote as they see fit. Forming an opinion also means being aware of the consequences of a decision. That is why the IG Detailhandel (the political advocacy group representing leading Swiss retailers Migros, Denner, and Coop, currently chaired by Migros CEO Mario Irminger) has decided to take a stand and advocate for a “No” vote. This is because a “Yes” vote on the initiative would no longer guarantee that the retail sector can find enough employees to maintain current service levels.
By the way: Ever since its founding, Migros, along with its founder Gottlieb Duttweiler, has occasionally commented on referendum proposals. It takes a stand when political decisions directly affect its values, its business operations, or its social responsibility. As a cooperative enterprise, Migros sees itself not only as a business but also as part of society. When referendums concern Migros-related issues—such as consumer protection, sustainability, working conditions, or, as in the case of the “No to a 10-Million-Switzerland” initiative, the framework conditions for the retail sector—Migros makes its position transparent.
