Why is the transparent plastic cutlery at the Migros checkout so extraordinarily heavy and 'luxurious'?
If a non-plastic alternative could be found, that would be best - but at least the plastic waste per piece of cutlery could be reduced to about a third by offering a less heavy version. I think it's even worse at Coop - they still wrap each spoon in plastic wrap with a napkin.
The plastic cutlery is transparent and of such excellent quality that it could easily pass as reusable cutlery. However, this will probably happen in very few cases. You can also buy fairly minimalist disposable cutlery in Migros, which is white and light as a feather (thin-walled, but still sturdy enough thanks to clever folding of the edges). I immediately believe that some seemingly ecological alternatives would perform worse on balance (bamboo cutlery with epoxy bonding etc). But I find it hard to believe that the current solution is the optimal one. Couldn't we also charge a fee for plastic cutlery, tubes etc.? It's high time we stemmed the plastic tide.
Kind regards

Hello Simon3047
I'm contacting you on behalf of Kathrin (she's on vacation at the moment) :)
Many thanks for the further updates and your constructive input. I will pass on your thoughts to my colleagues at Genossenschaft Aare and who knows, maybe something really can be adapted.
hello, simon i understand your feelings and your idea to remove the cutlery but you should know why it is being used ! then you can get a proper picture of the situation from . both sides Why Plastic Cutlery Is So extensively Used nowadays #1 – value The easy fact is that compostable utensils are one of the few compostable food packaging objects where fees have now not come down substantially, relative to to be had plastic alternatives. A case of compostable cutlery can be 3x or 4x the rate of a case of plastic cutlery ($10 for a case of one,000 plastic forks vs $30-$40 for a case of 1,000 compostable forks). this can be tough to stomach, especially for small business proprietors of eating places & cafes who function on very thin margins. The hassle is that the value of plastic cutlery doesn’t account for its full environmental price. It doesn’t account for the landfill space needed, the expanded power used to fabricate it, and it sure doesn’t account for the BP Oil Spills of the arena. #2 – comfort Plastic cutlery makes lifestyles less difficult on corporations, who as a substitute of having to scrub a bunch of metallic forks, spoons, and knives, can truly ask cutomers to discard their cutlery once they’re done ingesting. It also makes existence less difficult on customers who're web hosting occasions or parties with a massive quantity of guests. No clean-up involved – certainly **bleep** the utensils within the trash. This issue I take critical difficulty with however. maximum households and groups have dishwashers that make the cleaning manner very quick and green… and even if they don’t, how lengthy does is definitely take to clean a big batch of utensils? tips For purchasers, I’d like to suggest the following: Use re-usable steel cutlery whenever you’re eating at home with your family. if you’re throwing a massive event and should use disposables, please buy compostable cutlery. if you’re supplied plastic cutlery by way of a commercial enterprise (e.g., you’re selecting up a few to move meals), ask yourself in case you really want it. over the last few years, I’ve started out turning down almost all plastic cutlery that I’m supplied. It’s a bit awkward in the beginning with cashiers, however you get used it, and it’s the handiest manner we’re going to educate companies that they don’t want to hand out plastic cutlery in every to go bag. For corporations And eating places, I’d want to advocate the subsequent: For customers which can be eating in, please use metallic re-usable cutlery. Plastic just doesn’t flavor proper on your mouth and also you’ll find maximum of your customers could tons opt to consume with metallic cutlery (I realize I do). The advanced eating experience need to be properly really worth the cleaning, and in the end you’ll grow to be saving cash as you’ll simplest be procuring a bit water and cleaning soap to wash your cutlery… in preference to procuring a new fork for every purchaser. For customers which can be getting their meals added – they’re at domestic! What home does now not have metallic cutlery in the drawer. those folks do not need disposables. For customers which are taking their meals to move, please ask them if they want disposable cutlery earlier than surely setting it in their to head bag. Many clients are heading domestic or returned to paintings in which they've get entry to to re-usable cutlery and could in reality throw away your plastic cutlery (I realize you’ve visible this occur just as often as i've). shop the cutlery and the cash and ask the question first. And finally, in the event you do ought to give out disposable cutlery – use compostable cutlery. no longer plastic. regards rajesh
Yes, it's even worse at Coop. They wrap everything in plastic foil with a napkin. In addition, you only get the fork in combination with a knife. This means that even more is wasted as the knife is often not used at all and ends up unused in the bin...
I am of exactly the same opinion as you, Simon3047, but I have to say that I actually keep the plastic cutlery and use it several times because, as you mentioned, it is so "solid". I use the fork every time until I "still" manage to break off a "Zinggen"... :-)
