Hello migros111
I have clarified the matter. Migros has long been committed to animal welfare and species-appropriate husbandry.
For this reason, Migros imposed new requirements on the supplier of horsemeat in Canada in 2013 with regard to animal husbandry, transportation, slaughter and traceability. A new plant is currently being built for Migros on site in Alberta, Canada. The facility should be completed in summer 2014 and the first horses can be stabled. Migros has always kept the Zurich Animal Welfare Association (TSB) informed about the efforts on the ground in Canada; TSB has welcomed this project.
The images from Canada shown on Kassensturz on March 11, 2014 are horrific and will not be tolerated by Migros. With the construction of the new plant in Alberta Canada, our supplier has the opportunity to implement the specifications we have requested. Once construction is complete, acceptance and regular inspections will be carried out by independent bodies.
If our specifications are not implemented as planned and we do not achieve our goal of improving animal welfare, we will take the consequences and cut ties with Canada.
I hope you can understand this reaction.
Best regards
