Why doesn't Migros completely avoid palm oil in food? For the consumer/customer, the origin, whether overexploitation or "non-exploitation" is NOT VERIFIABLE/controllable and palm oil is simply UNNECESSARY and UNWANTED! Most consumers would very much LIKE TO AVOID having palm oil foisted on them in their food!!!

Hello Green123 Thank you for your question, which we are happy to answer. Why palm oil is used: It should be noted that, compared to other vegetable oils, palm oil requires much less land for the same amount of oil. Palm oil is also the only oil from tropical regions for which cultivation standards exist. Switching to other oils is therefore not a permanent solution for us, as this would merely transfer the criticized environmental problems to other oils. The only sensible way forward is to continuously improve the cultivation standards for oil palms. ETH Zurich agrees, but we are constantly reviewing our recipes to analyze which fat makes the most sense. This includes ecological and health aspects in relation to processing properties and customer requirements. However, replacing palm oil is not possible everywhere. Palm oil has an influence on the consistency, color or combination with the other ingredients and therefore cannot always be replaced without compromising quality. As far as sustainability aspects are concerned, RSPO palm oil only has a market share of around 20% worldwide. In contrast, we know the plantations on which the palm trees are grown for 98% of the palm oil used in our own food brands. We ensure that, among other things, no rainforests are cut down, no peat bogs are destroyed and no critical pesticides are used. We also set clear requirements in terms of social conditions. The plantations are regularly inspected by the independent organization "Earthworm Foundation". This means that we can guarantee 98% of the sustainability of the palm oil we use.
