In my Migros store, all the scanners for self-scanning were recently replaced with more modern ones. They had only been in operation for about 1 1/2 years. Why did this have to happen? The sales clerk couldn't give me an answer to that question either.

Thanks to your question, I found out that all scanners in all stores will be replaced with new ones by 2018.
The reason is that a new software for the Migros checkout system will come into force after that, with which the old scanners would no longer be compatible.

Quite apart from that, I find the reduction to one button on the hardware for the start-up scanning process and closing only positive - all the rest is better done by the software: forward, back, total view, changing the number etc. can be done very well on the screen and also gives the possibility for an expansion in the direction of the prepared article transfer from the shopping list of the M-App or PC, the activation of coupons + Cumulus vouchers and who knows... a search function for articles may sound exotic... but who would have thought of a navigation system in the car 30 years ago ? ... ;-)
