We were then refused the discount because the minimum purchase only applied to the barbecue, which in my view is incorrect or at least very misleading.

If your new grill did not cost at least CHF 399.00, the sellers were right not to grant the discount. The promotion is:
20% on all barbecue appliances
This means: The barbecue must reach the minimum purchase amount without accessories and/or additional products.
