A visit to a Micasa store in the Zurich area last Saturday got me thinking: a younger colleague needed some furniture for her new apartment - and some information at the store's information desk. An older gentleman helped us and couldn't resist complimenting the younger lady on how pretty she was. Then he asked if we were mother and daughter .... Firstly, it was none of his business, secondly, he didn't need to grin so suggestively and thirdly ... no one in their right mind who wasn't looking for a joke would have asked that question!
It would all have been bearable .... His young colleague then led us to the pick-up point and told us on the way that we shouldn't take it tragically - after all, her older colleague would call her "pug" or "Möpsli".
Does the older gentleman even realize what he is doing to his younger colleague? Does he think about how it makes her feel? Probably not .... It's also obvious that she won't put up a fight - after all, he's around 60, she's perhaps 25. He may have been there for 40 years and be well established, while she may have only recently joined and have no lobby.
It could also be that I'm worrying too much and unnecessarily - maybe she thinks it's okay and even funny ... I don't know.

I dare say that something like this would never happen in a Coop store. In the same way, for example, that a customer in a Coop store wouldn't overhear the staff's weekend experiences over two shelves. Episodes like this show time and again how the staff training of the two competitors is obviously weighted differently.

I used to work at both Coop and Migros and they're not that different...
However, as a trained retail employee, I have to say that many of the things we learned back then in the early 90s are no longer taught to young people today and are of even less interest to them...

@Sirio: Such "training methods" can also very quickly lead to dictatorial traits in a company. Relaxed management methods that rely on common sense are always better than strict rules ("No rule without exception"...). From what I hear, the wind is even harsher at Coop in these matters than at Migros. Of course, I also think that any transgressions by employees (as in the case above) must be addressed.
for better or worse, i was in the coop last week and there were 4 of them drinking over the weekend. not quietly but i could hear it behind the wine shelf. so it certainly has nothing to do with migros!
