Dear Migros
For some time now, it has been possible to mark organic food with a laser without any loss of quality. Five European countries have already been doing this for some time, with great success. Don't you want to be pioneers too? Respond to customer needs? Avoid waste?
I would very much welcome it if I could soon buy organic vegetables or fruit marked with a laser at Migros.

Aha, you obviously watched "Kassensturz" tonight. I also watched it and therefore know that Migros is skeptical about laser-cutting vegetables because they have found that the vegetables spoil more quickly where they have been laser-cut.

Yes, I have. But I've been wondering about this for a while.
I don't want to accept Migros' answer. This Dutch company has been doing this for years, and other wholesalers around Switzerland have followed suit. Only we, little Gaul, have to be skeptical again and lag behind. We will soon be faced with a major problem, because China no longer wants to import plastic waste...where to put it?
I'll just say this much: anyone who wants to buy organic consciously will welcome the opportunity to shop without packaging. Packaging-free is all the rage and people are already changing their mindset. So why wait any longer? It works!
I'm of the same opinion. It can't be right that you have to buy organic fruit and vegetables at Migros almost exclusively packaged in plastic.

We already had this question on Twitter and Facebook today, so I can answer it in a little more detail here.
As you already know, we tested these laser tattoos or bio-branding, as you like to call them, very early on. For various reasons, we did not introduce it.
Some products unfortunately rotted under the branding. And that would lead to food waste.
In addition, the machine was not fast enough at the time of testing and there are not very many of them. So there would be capacity bottlenecks and the vegetables would have to be carted across half of Europe just to be branded. That would not be ecological.
And it doesn't work equally well on all products, you mainly see laser-cut sweet potatoes, which are particularly suitable for this. The same applies to coconuts. Until recently, it didn't work particularly well with citrus fruits either, but now it seems to be working better. The technology seems to be making progress, so we are definitely keeping an eye on it.
For many years, we have been working on unpacking our (organic) products wherever possible and possibly adding stickers and labels to distinguish them. However, the thin plastic film actually also serves the purpose of protecting the food from spoiling too quickly. Since in most cases the packaging only accounts for 1-4% of the life cycle assessment (i.e. production, transportation, disposal, etc.), it would be much worse if the food were to spoil prematurely.
Paper or cardboard is often not fundamentally better. For paper, you would need thicker packaging, then the transportation needs more weight and it keeps moisture out worse.
I hope you understand our reasons for this. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask them here. It's a complex topic and can't be answered in two or three sentences.

I don't see the point of paper and cardboard, because jute would be enough to prevent the food from rotting. At least (yes, it's awkward), but tomatoes, grapes, etc. could somehow be done with or without Depo. That used to work too. The folk should no longer be so sensitive. That's the point, I've already come across moldy bananas, of course I stay away from them. But did you know that the more brown spots the bananas have, the healthier they are? This also applies to organic bananas.
I'd like to ask the other way round .... how much Foodwave does Migros do and doesn't give the food to "Tischlein Deck dich"?
It would be interesting for customers to know. And you can bring the answer from the top.

It is true that one kilogram of plastic has a greater impact on the environment than one kilogram of glass or cardboard. But plastic packaging usually requires significantly less material than packaging made of glass, cardboard or paper. It is therefore usually much lighter. This saves resources and reduces the impact during transportation. For example, lightweight plastic bag packaging is the most environmentally friendly packaging. By switching from cardboard containers to thin plastic bags, Migros has reduced the environmental impact of its organic quinoa packaging by 65 percent, for example.
The issue of food waste
Migros collects data on the proportion of food waste in its stores and catering formats (Migros restaurants and takeaways). The figures show that Migros' efforts to avoid wasting food are paying off: 98.6 percent of the food we offered in2017 was sold or given away as food - at regular or reduced prices or free of charge to charitable organizations. Charitable organizations also receive financial support from Migros.
Only 1.4 percent of the food we offered was not used as food. 1.1 percent of this was fermented in the form of biogas, the rest was either turned into animal feed or compost or incinerated. All food that Migros disposes of means a loss of valuable resources for the company on the one hand and costs on the other. We therefore strive to keep food waste as low as possible.

Daily only at the end of the working day, saleable products thrown clear makes Migros loss. Only in the evening over 1 pallet of edible food. Ask at the source and you'll confirm my statement. I don't want to know how much Migros itself sells in 1 store
Morning and defn midday are not even included. Only take-away and restaurant. That's the reality. Animals love roast chicken, fresh cheesecake and cake, but first look for people - there's enough pet food. It goes to waste anyway, there's a loss either way.
