For weeks now, only potatoes from Egypt have been available on the open market. Are there really not enough potatoes in Switzerland for our citizens? Is this madness really necessary?????

Hello jajajaja, thank you for your message. As a rule, Migros sources around 80 % to 95 % of its total potato requirements from domestic production, depending on the size of the Swiss harvest. In a normal harvest year, we have a good to very good supply of domestic stock from the previous year until around April/May. From then on, we import potatoes from Israel/Egypt and European countries such as Cyprus and Spain in order to guarantee the required quantities. In spring, there is also customer demand for fresh potatoes. These imports also take place within the framework of WTO quotas (World Trade Organization). This means that these quotas oblige Switzerland to guarantee other countries a corresponding market entry. Best regards, Noemi

I should have bet that the answer would be another piece of marketing gobbledygook. It's a shame that there is a not inconsiderable proportion of people in Switzerland who generate an idiotic "customer need". Otherwise, this nonsense of imported goods and a simultaneous glut of potatoes in Switzerland would quickly come to an end. WTO quotas then... I would be interested to know what would happen if the "customer need" suddenly disappeared and Switzerland still had to import foreign goods... Would then probably be used as animal feed or "organic gasified", while the poor people in Egypt can't even afford their own potatoes. I'm also looking forward to the new early potatoes - straight from my trusted farmer. You have to be patient.
