Of course, we also try to be as environmentally friendly as possible with our coffee capsules. With the plastic capsules, we have created the optimum combination of quality requirements and environmental compatibility.
Café Royal and Delizio capsules do not require a costly recycling process. The environmental impact of our plastic capsules tends to be lower than that of aluminum capsules, which are recyclable.
Our capsules are made from polypropylene (the same material yogurt pots are made from) and can be easily disposed of with household waste. Thanks to its high combustion performance, the material even supports the combustion process in the plant. The roasted coffee powder also burns at high temperatures.
We currently sell the coffee capsules in "normal" plastic and not in compostable bioplastic. Contrary to popular belief, bioplastic is not more environmentally friendly than normal plastic, mainly due to the production process. Bioplastics are currently made from corn and sugar cane. Many liters of water, fertilizer and pesticides are required for cultivation, which pollutes the soil and groundwater. That's why we don't see bioplastics as a solution at the moment. However, we are keeping a close eye on developments. If it becomes possible to produce bioplastics from organic waste, this could be a groundbreaking turning point.
