On December 27, I was astonished to see Epiphany cakes being sold alongside Fasnachtschüechli in the Migros store. Epiphany takes place on a single day, namely January 6. Why can't you sell the cake on this special day and only on this day? How are we supposed to explain traditions to our children?

Hello, I think Epiphany cakes from December 26/27 are absolutely ok. Depending on the canton, 6 January may be a public holiday, in which case Migros is closed and there would be no Epiphany cakes at all. In cantons where January 6 is not an official public holiday, the church celebration is moved to the second Sunday after Christmas, so Migros is closed again and there are no Epiphany cakes. And then January 6 can fall on a Sunday, which means that...
You can also buy cinnamon stars in October and not just during the Advent season. Do you have fewer problems explaining this to the children?

We offer the Epiphany cakes from the last week of the calendar (52), as these pastries are very popular with our customers and there is already a demand for them before January 6. Today, everything must always be available. So the "special" degenerates into the banal. It's best to buy pastries in the bakery anyway. Those who know / notice the difference are happy to pay the few centimes more. Sometimes less is more. E.g. for indulgence, special occasions....You should celebrate. But that's no longer the order of the day, even though there's an event for everything these days. But nobody wants to go to the trouble of getting something from the begg, for example. But this is the only way to preserve good "craftsmanship". Otherwise, in 10 years' time, we'll only be eating baked goods or packaged bread and pastries like in the USA and everything will taste the same. Just mainstream, standardised, whatever you want to call it. Do you really have to eat Epiphany cake 10 times a day? Just bypass the wholesalers (they won't go bankrupt just because you buy bread and pastries from the bakery or pastry shop). I live in Reinach BL and enjoy the fact that there are three bakeries there with great offers. I won't comment on the cinnamon stars & co. as this would go beyond the scope of this article.
I could eat the Epiphany cake every day, I don't need a "special day" for it ;-) Migros just adapts to the competition, Coop, Lidl, Aldi also have this cake on offer at the end of December until January 6th. I don't think it's so bad, it's just like the Christmas cookies, Easter eggs, etc. The Christmas cookies are already available from the end of October/beginning of November, Easter bunnies are sure to arrive soon at the end of January/beginning of February and so on. That's the way it is, everyone wants to be earlier than everyone else to rake in more sales. As long as the majority of customers buy so early, this offer will also be available so early.
