Hello Migros Team
The entire refrigeration system at a neighborhood Migros near where I work seems to have broken down over the weekend. This is of course very annoying and I also understand that the goods can no longer be sold.
Nevertheless, I couldn't quite understand why all the goods were thrown away pallet by pallet. It was very sad to see that so much food was simply thrown away. I can't imagine that everything was spoiled without exception. A lot of it would certainly still have been edible if it had been consumed or processed on the same day. Couldn't these goods have been given to a soup kitchen or another organization that could have sorted out and distributed the food that was still usable?
A real shame and an incredible waste....

Thanks for your message. It's really unfortunate that the refrigeration failed - last weekend of all weekends when it was so hot.
Migros has very strict hygiene regulations, so it's really not possible to still offer the products for sale after such a breakdown.
I will be happy to pass on your suggestion about the organizations so that this can be taken into consideration if something like this happens again. However, I'm not sure whether an organization like the soup kitchen would have been able to process the products as quickly and spontaneously as would have been necessary. They certainly plan several days in advance and would not have had the capacity for such a delivery at such short notice.
Nevertheless, I think it's a good idea and will pass it on.

I very much welcome your suggestion! Food waste is an issue that is very close to my heart! Perhaps another institution, such as a church lunch table, would have been interested in processing the food the same day?

Thank you for your reply. I fully understand that the food can no longer be sold and I also understand that some of it was probably spoiled. Nevertheless, I am sure that despite everything, a large proportion of the food could have been recycled.
Off the top of my head, I could think of organizations like Tischlein deck Dich or the Swiss food banks, which could certainly have helped in the short term or, as Kathrin mentioned, a church lunch table. I think I even read an article in Migros magazine some time ago about organizations like the Tafel and similar.
Maybe you could keep a list of such organizations at the Migros head office for just such cases and contact them accordingly if such a mishap occurs. These organizations are usually active throughout Switzerland.

Unfortunately, you don't write which branch exactly it concerns. That's a shame, because it means Tanja can't clarify what exactly happened. I also assume that you think that "the entire refrigeration system" has failed there, but you don't know for sure.
Can you please name the store in question?

It was the Efringerstrasse store in Basel. I saw that the staff had cleared out all the refrigerated shelves in the entire store, so I assume that the entire refrigeration system was affected.
I would also like to say that the staff worked really hard to get everything back in order, chapeau!

Thank you very much for your reply. I didn't just ask for the exact branch so that Tanja could clarify what exactly happened, but because there was an oven fire in the Wettingen branch a few days ago and some food had to be disposed of because of the smoke. (Tele M1/Aargauer Zeitung)
