You also experience this with self-scanning (removing the scanner AND triggering the payment process with the Cumulus card at the machine - incidentally, this is also the disadvantage of TWINT if you don't yet have a routine.
It also makes a difference whether a 2m person or a 1.60m person does this - until you get used to it, the angle of incidence is slightly different. At the right distance, I find that pulling away is more effective than moving towards.... but maybe I'm just saying that because that's how I feel when registering with the Cumulus card at the hand scanner machine.
This is also the big advantage of NFC during the payment process (contactless payment) - it only goes wrong if you are "too fast", i.e. the cashier has not yet switched to card payment. Otherwise you simply have to hold out your card/mobile phone.
